This is common, drivers parked at the kerb make a cursory check in
their mirrors (if at all) and then pull out without indicating- a
cyclist in broad daylight doesn't even register. What did the cops say?

Not quite. Because technically it still wouldn't be his fault. It just
it moves into a question in the defensive cycling category.

I was recently knocked off overtaking a line of stationary traffic
behind a bus. 4x4 suddenly pulls out without signalling pushes me off
into the opposite pavement, didn't stop of course.

On reflection it seems to me that this is normal car behaviour (not
right, but we all know they don't care) and it is safer to go up the
inside. I accept you are more likely to get knocked off but it is less
likely to push you into oncoming traffic.

Obviously you need to look out for railings and also left turning lorries.

I had a good one yesterday. Car parked on my side of the road facing
towards me. I was cycling towards it, well out in the primary position
(thank goodness) ready to pass, when the driver suddenly pulled away,
straight towards me. My presence eventually registered, so what did she
do? Just carried on and passed on my left and turned to her right into
a side road (bearing in mind she she was driving in the wrong direction!)

I think if I'd been a meek gutter-hugging cyclist I would now be a flat
cyclist in hospital.

And when you do leave a gap, you just get abuse from
motorists.

Last week I was cycling about three feet from a line of
parked cars when a cager behind me started blasting his
horn and waving for me to get out of his way. When I
stopped in front of him and asked what the problem was, he
just started yelling incoherently.

I must admit that just lately I've been surprised by the number of cars
waiting patiently behind me whilst I cycle a good 3 to 4ft from parked
cars. Queues of parked cars by shopping centres and sea fronts are
especially lethal!

Aye, the no.1 rule of urban cycling is Do Not Ride In The Door Zone.

However, this may not have prevented GarryfromCork's accident; the only
thing that can do that is careful observation of whether parked cars
have anyone in the driver's seat (hard with blacked-out chavmobiles),
whether the wheels are moving (easier to see than whether the whole car
is creeping forward), etc.

I hope he got the driver's details.

I sometimes get quite embarassed by the froggies leaving so much space
for me, especially at the moment as I'm still a long way from fit, so
toddling along at 20kph or less... but then again, they seam happy to
wait, so why should I worry?

Parked traffic is usually stationary.

Surely if it's parked then it isn't traffic. Certainly, my understanding
of the word is that 'traffic' is that set of vehicles whose drivers
actually intend to make progress.

I'm rather younger than you and I've already been hit twice - once, when
I lived in Hayling Island - on a bright, clear day, straight road,
excellent visibility, someone in a Fiesta travelling the opposite way
decided to turn into a side road without checking that the oncoming lane
was clear. Just bruises from that, and I was doing nearly 30 mph at the
time. I was quite amazed at how high I flew, and even more amazed when I
landed that nothing got broken.

Then about a month and a half ago, an older driver - again, on a bright
clear day, straight road, excellent visibility, rammed me from behind.
Fortunately he caught me only a glancing blow. Again, I went flying, but
only received bruises and scrapes. The last one should have been able to
see me for at least 10 seconds at the speed (50 mph) that he was
travelling at. The police are prosecuting.

And the poster said from a parked position, not parked.

I take it was a queue and the driver decided to go another way. A
dangerous manoeuvre at any time by the car.
