Even better than a "yellow jersey contender", Fignon, in yellow, attacking
solo on the last hilly stage to grab a few more seconds before the final TT
in 89.

You are so ignorant. Besides the other ones mentioned there's Lemond in
'86 on Alpe d' Huez (breakaway w/ teamate Hinault) and Pantani in 1998,
the day it rained and he put 8 minutes into Ullrich.thanks,

162 km solo breakaway. -

just read that he was 72 km into it when he went. Nevertheless that still 77
miles. Try staying away from a peloton for a couple of miles and then
multiply that by 35. At my best I managed to ride away from a good peloton
for almost exactly one mile before blowing up.TheVuelta is NOT the Tour.

The year that Jalabert won at Mende was 1995, when he finished 4th overall
behind Indurain, by attacking and going on a LONG break on Bastille Day.
Postal didn't exist yet (except in their geeky Montgomery-Bell incarnation
which did NOT race the Tour de France). -
