Don't discharge lamps take a few minutes to strike again once they go out?
I thought they have to cool enough for the pressure in the lamp to drop
before they can re-strike. Do these lights suffer from that?

Worse than that, you severely shorten the bulb life if you turn them back on hot.
Not a big issue given the run time, just don't turn it off. You can always put your hand in front (until it gets too hot) to avoid blinding someone.
I have a Light&Motion ARC and get 3 commutes out of one charge. Its handy being able to turn your light on when the first cars do, especially since its worthwhile!

It's funny coz I posted the cycnews link to them in
the Kona24 thread. :-)

For the amount of night mtb'ing I do they're a little
out of my price range :-) One of the roadie would
be awesome though - I'd probably get a whole
week's riding on one charge! :-)

A very nice light set!

I used my home brew 10W HID set again at the Kona 24. The Vicious light set uses the same bulb with a custom split ballast, less weight on your head & high/low power settings. Oh, and Li-Ion batteries too.

With a HID light you turn it on & leave it on. While the light is over kill when riding slowly up hills, you can spot all the little critters that come out at night. Did you know that spiders eyes reflect your light like tiny jewels?

Apparently Saul Britton, the solo winner of this year's Kona, was running a pre-release set of these lights... Whether that contributed to his victory we can only guess! 😉

Must admit it's great fun watching people emerge from the forest in the distance and seeing either yellow (halogen), blue (HID), or the rare white (LED)...

I was running 2 homebrew 20w halogens and they worked pretty well - I'm sold on helmet lights now! Although I'm now playing with the idea of luxeons now after seeing Night Lightning's little set up... tempting.

nothing to stop you using the roadie for Kona, I reckon it would still be pretty good. So long as you get some daylight laps in first.

Where did you get the "bulbs" and how much? We built some 35W HID lights
that were quite nice but over kill.
Been looking for a local source for lower wattage HID units.

The thought crossed my mind.. if only for the back pain
relief compared to riding my hardtail.. of course the number
of crashes would increase exponentially, along with the
cost of parts and repairs! ;-)

I'm still struggling with my corked ribcage!

A few years ago the aust distributor for Solarc lamps had some for sale individually. I think I bought the last one. It wasn't exactly cheap, at least $200 ~ 250 for the lamp & balast. All up with housing & battery packs etc, I would have spent about half the price of a commercial unit. That not counting my time & labor.

What 35W lamp did you use? Thats a lot of light. 🙂

Did anyone see the coverage SBS did yesterday on what i presume was the Kona 24hr???
Was just getting in from a ride and caught a highlights/image at about 4pm'ish
couldnt see any faces i recognised (well... hippy, bikesoiler or eddiec)
