  1. 2004 BRW Triathlon RR
    (400m Swim/10k Ride/4k Run)

    Fri:
    Replaced American Classic Hubbed rear
wheel with a "normal" Ultegra-hubbed one
Replaced a badly frayed rear derailleur cable.

    Sat:
Rode 'new and improved' Peugeot down to Elwood
Beach for registration. After removing all the
removable bits the bike stayed there overnight.
Somehow the three of us scored prime positions
on bike row 1. It's nice not having to remember
a row number in the midst of a little exertion. 🙂

    Sun:
After attending a friend's birthday dinner last
night (pizza and beer - best pre-race meal!) and
retiring at midnight, I was pleasantly surprised
by my alarm going off at 4.30AM. Yes, "A"M not
the much preferred "PM". This might be normal for
some of you folks, but certainly not me - I prefer
    the sleep-in/dodge-cars method.
Hooking up with a team mate, we drive in to
Elwood and prepare the bikes: pump tyres, layout
helmet, spd shoes, runners, t-shirt, sunnies.
Nibbling on a Powerbar and sipping Gatorade (Hey!
I had to look the part :P) we spent time wandering
around or 'flushing' dinners, waiting for the
    start.
Sooner than we expected, the first wave was off,
disturbing the beautifully calm sea. As well as
the good bike spot, we were also off early, ~4mins
after the first wave, I think.
Dave had to rush down to the start because they
were actually on time! He's quick and estimated a
    35min finish time.
Passing most of the waves that left before him,
Dave was into transition in approx. 6th place
    overall!
Scaring the "buff" crowd, I was ready and waiting
to take the electronic timing band, wearing only
tri-shorts, goggles and a swim cap. eek!
I'm out of breath before I even make it to the
water. Swim goes relatively well (well I'm alive
to type this!) and I exit the water feeling better
    than I expected.
On goes the tee, the glasses and the helmet.
Glasses fog up. Off come the glasses.
Onto the bike course and I spin briefly to get the
legs used to not drowning. Then it's into 52/15(?)
and my mission Jim, is to pass everything that moves.
Early on I am passed by a CBD Cycles rider on an
    aerobar/disc-wheel bike. He was moving!
I pass just about everyone else. Another aerobar
rider passes me, then I pass him, then he passes
me, etc. (you get the idea, right?).
He loses me at the turn-around but then catches me
~1k from the finish. He has 3 riders sucking his
wheel... hard... in this 'non-drafting' event.
I like to mess with people, so, I up the pace and
pass all four of them, then click it down and spin
    the last 100m before dismounting.
The run was slow. I had only trained for a week
and I was the heaviest I've been.. ever (100kg).
First 1k was ok, then I slowed quite a bit. Moral
was boosted at the turn-around and I started
chasing people down that passed me.
The "double-bouncing, trampoline bridge" was fun!
Really hurting myself, I 'sprinted' the last 2-300m
to the transition. Struggled to remove the stupid
ankle timing strap and watched our last guy take off.
    Into the Gatorade...and snakes...and beer ;-)

Averaged ~37.6kph over the 10k ride.
Official times might follow, if not too embarassing.

Summary: Bloody good fun, even after all my
sooking about having to do it. Training not
necessary, but faster run would've been nice.

    So don't use them.

You haven't had your morning coffee yet, right?

The same thing can happen in my newsreader
anyway... it's called a "mistake", a keyboard slip,
a case of fingers being too fat for keys, a whoopsee,
etc, blah, etc, blah, uh huh whatever.

    I'll have you know, I was wearing tri-shorts! :P
(just like bike knicks except w/ a thinner chamois)

    4500+ competitors...

Compared to last year and the year before, this year
had an INSANE amount of people. Twas great!

  8. Yes, but you were blocking my way!!!

perhaps I shoulda shouted at you like Drs does to kids on bikepaths...

  9. Tis the season for triathlons, on the Audax list recently was a stirling tale by Bow Macleod. A extract:

".......It's been a while so i thought I'd write a small ride report. This is a non-Audax event so please let me know if my breach in protocol has seriously offended anyone and I'll slip out the back and thrash myself with Birch branches.

Anyone living outside a 228* postcode could be forgiven for missing the Sparke Helmore triathlon on Sunday. It is an annual event involving a handful of elite athletes being chased by the masochistic portion of Newcastle across unfavourable terrain in aid of the Hunter Medical Research Institute. Given my liking to the odd cleansing ale, I figured that HMRI's stem cell research could come in handy for some replacement organs in later life and decided I would take up my workmates' challenges and 'fight them on the beaches...' etc.

It was a bit silly really. I can swim a bit, but 500m is a big ask. I put in a serious amount of pool time until I was at a competant level (ie. no assistance with inflatable or positivley bouyant devices). A quick inspection of the rules did not mention the prohibition of SCUBA, but fins were prohibited and cooler heads prevailled......"

So? You blamed the web interface, not me. And choosing to
use a web interface to an NNTP news group when you've got a
newsreader is beyond my comprehension anyway. Damned silly
    thing to do.

Oh dear. you have crossed a line, havent you?

One's true colours are sadly coming out for all to see.
Perhaps one should pause and breathe before spewing forth into ranthood, Mr Drs

"Trying to cause an accident". Sounds like youre doing a bangup job of misrepresenting yourself, without the need for any of us to point out your foibles.

Kids are now consciuosly going out onto bikepaths maliciously causing accidents.

Apologies to you, hippy for using your string

If I may suggest to all thread-viewers to keep clear of Mr Drs, above.

    G'day Drs,

Well...now that I've been made aware that my kids are 'trying to cause accidents' on bike paths...I shall have them steer clear in future & ride on roads.....Hume hwy perhaps?, Stkilda rd during peak hour?....ahh, the ultimate...Hoddle St/punt Rd during peak hour?......what do you imagine Bike paths are actually for idiot?

    cheers,

    G'day 'dutch,

unfortunately being an idiot isn't a 'hanging offence'. Unfortunately Drs is entitled to to have a forum for his particular brand of lunacy!. He/she/It is actually quite mild compared to some of the cretins on the 'Cycling equipment' forum. check out a moron called 'bacardi' & his rant on carbon frames & you'll see what I mean,

    cheers,

    Hitchy

Unless, you are sick and tired of having to mark the same
threads as read at home and work every day - I am.
This is where a web-interface shines. If I've read a thread,
it stays read - at home, at work, in Italy, in Perth.
Also, this particular web interface gives access to more than
    just the ng's.
It is also available when I _don't_ have access to a
    newsreader.

Usually my "why bother" meter is quite good, but I've
been feeling particularly annoyed the last few days
and just had to reply (Must be all that soreness from
the never-used tri muscles coming on strong...)

    Anyone have a knowledge-base on post-race depression?

  19. Hi Hippy, 'Dutch and Hitchy:

"Happy to see Hippy" as a forum member (or maybe new to me). With the rate that you guys post, your numbers will be flying ('Dutch's are already flying). 🙂

Glad that you all had productive weekends (bike-wise). I did ride in the Big Canberra Ride with several mates. It was a lot of fun. Over 600 people showed up in the long weekend. The best thing was the number of kids. Compared to "Hell Ride", this was "Heaven Ride"! A very good occasion to promote cycling for youngsters. See, they say Melbourne is the Capital city for "Classy" thingies. But you guys have "hell" rides where cops try to screw the riders (not literally) 😉 Here we had the support of officials, so burn in envy ;=P

As far as shouting and debating goes, people seem to have different attitudes. As 'Dutch pointed out, true colours of people will come out sooner or later. So pretty soon every new one can learn who is her/his type or not. One thing I have learnt is not to engage in a debate with Mr/Ms Drs (with due respect). But that may change over time.

    Have Fun,
    Amir.

just trying to live up to the name :-)

    600 riders. nice.
but that is mere fools gold compared to the 7.5k on the roundthebayinaday and the bv melbourne ride of approx 20k. hahahahaha (he laughs maniacally, but not HELLishly...)

Still, good to see them kids out there and giving those PS/xbox thumbs a rest

(but you do have all those luverly hills...)
