Hello
Sorry to hear about your [censored] luck ... I am just emerging from a bit of an injury nightmare, and waiting for an MRI was part of the problem, so thought you might like to know my tips for speeding it up.
Dunno where you live, but the chances are that you may be able to be referred to another hospital. I live in London and could have been referred to UCH, Barts, Royal London, Royal Free and Homerton. I did alot of phoning around MRI departments and discovered that waiting lists vary wildly - from 3 weeks at Barts to 6 months at the Royal London! So it's worth doing your research and then possibly requesting to your GP that you're referred elsewhere.
Make a real nuisance of yourself, but be nice and polite with it - I was in pain but I'm a bit [censored] at talking up my pain, so a handy girl/boyfriend/relative prepared to be assertive to your consultant about how much agony you're in is really useful. My girlfriend was great! That was the single most important factor in speeding up my scan. It really hurts, make sure you let them know, and dwell on it! Say that you are happy to accept cancellations for a scan too. Unfortunately the more noise you make about pain and your condition, the greater your chances of speeding up your treatment - shouldn't be that way, but it is. And I work for the NHS! The logic is screwed - they pay me a fortune to be off sick because of an injury at work - but it costs them even more cos I wait so long for treatment!
In desperation I also investigated going private, which it seemed would cost around £700, but if you do this make sure that the consultant gives the scanners exact instructions on what he/she wants in the scan.
Have you been referred to a consultant? If not you should make sure your GP refers you asap. Because x-rays usually don't involve a wait in my area, though they don't show muscle damage - not sure about ligaments.
My pain was hernias coupled with chronic constipation, heh heh! I was just thanking god I had hernias too, as I really didn't want to tell work that I'd been off for 6 months with constipation!!! 😄 I go under the knife in Jan and should be back at work by Feb, yippee!
Oh well, good luck!
Reib said:Hi all, first off, apologies for the length of this post!
I injured my hip whilst cycling about 11 months ago and it hasnt healed yet. I just wondered if anyone has had this before or knows roughly what it could be?
Basically, during my training for the Marines (in which I cycled twice and ran 3 or 4 times a week) when riding up hill in the highest gear (hardest one), I felt my left hip/buttock twinge slightly. It caused no pain whatsoever but just felt weird.
I continued to train as it was causing no pain, just everytime it would just feel weird (almost like is was dislocated a little bit). I went for Royal Marine selection and when I got back I thought I would rest it for a week, but resting it made it worse. It got to a point where I could only just about walk.
I went to a doctor and he said it was the ligament in the hip near the sacroilliac (SI) joint and advised me to rest it. No change. I went to a chiropractor who, to be honest, made it worse. I have since been seeing a physio in which she believed it was the SI joint too and that I strained the ligament or muscle attached to it and the whole joint dropped a little when I rested it (as the muscles around it relaxed). She gave me exercises and it got a whole lot better. So much so, I am now cycling again and doing non-impact work at the gym (like cross trainers etc).
But it still hasnt gone completely. It twinges every so often and running is still out of the question. Everytime I try to run the impact really hurts (feels around the pelvis/SI joint/Coxsics (tailbone) area).
I apologise how vague it may sound and appreciate it is hard to tell over the internet, but I just wondered if anyone has had a similar injury or what I could do to get it sorted? Failing that, does anyone know where I could get an MRI scan or Xray as it is a years wait on NHS and it is holding up my career (Marines).
Thanks
Dave (Reib)
