Why aren't you addicted to CSI Miami? I am. I like CSI, too, but I'm

I don't remember mentioning this, but CSI-Miami is not my favorite CSI.
I feel that they give David Caruso's character lines that really
belong to Bill Peterson's character on the original CSI, and what BP
would under play and make wonderfully wry, DC over plays and that makes
it sound as hokey as something out of Dragnet. I do watch CSI Miami
every week, however, and it has improved. Sometimes I just think of it
as "Miami Ice"....

I doubt that Hilary was a loper based on her balanced boxing in latest
movie. I'll have to write to her and ask.

My impression is that Caine's character is more of a gun-totin',
tough-talkin' cop, while Grissom is probably closer to what a CSI
actually does. But Callie (Emily Procter) seems to be taking over the
show. I don't watch these shows as much lately. Until recently, we
were stuck with the local CBS affiliate, but now we have Dish and watch
all sorts of things in the high numbers, like the Daily Show, LinkTV,
Free Speech TV, etc.

I like Horatio Caine. I think he is probably nothing like a real CSI,
but I don't think Callie is realistic either. Caine rarely draws his
gun, but I think the tough talk is well-written and well-played. I
haven't seen the NY one yet, but I suppose both CSI and CSI Miami are
nothing like real investigations. For one thing, I think it takes a long
time to do DNA testing. I think it is a few days, rather than a few
minutes. But if I wanted reality, I would watch Jerry Springer.

CSI NY is grittier and more macabre than the others. It is even filmed
in a grainy style. I like it OK, but it is a waste of the talented
actors in the starring roles. I wish they hadn't franchised the concept
but had just worked harder on the original--it is only a matter of
time before there is overkill (no pun intended). CSI Vatican City, anyone?

The thing Horatio Caine does that really burns me is that he makes
unrealistic promises to children: "I will find your daddy's killer and
you'll be safe." It works well in drama, but in real life sets the
child up for a major fall.

Not only does it take much longer to do DNA testing than in the show,
some cities have years-long queues of samples waiting for testing due to
budget constraints.

Horatio is a bit mythic (kind of like Kwai-Chang Caine). At the end of
the first CSI-NY, Caine practically vanishes into thin air.

I can recall several recent episodes where he fires his weapon:

Speed's weapon jams in the jewelry store front while Horatio fires
away;
Horatio fires at a limo that is shooting at a hip-hop suspect and his
crew;
Horatio and uniformed police fire at military-grade weapon smugglers;
Horatio fires at an armored car robbery that occurs right in front of
him.

Back almost on-topic, I was watching Conan O'Brien interview Blanchard
Ryan of "Open Water." She spent 32 days in the water during filming.
She assumed that the shark scenes would carefully controlled, "one or
two sharks and 50 guys with bazookas." Actually, she said, it was
fifty sharks and no one with weapons. To maneuver the sharks, the
"shark wranglers" threw chunks of bloody tuna meat and other chum where
they wanted the sharks to congregate (somtimes hitting the actors).
The actors wore chain mesh under their wetsuits, but were otherwise
unprotected.

If true, this sounds awfully irresponsible.

Actually, the rate of depression is only higher in Finland. Norway and
the US, for example, are comparable.
