Apologies if this has been asked before. Is there an easy way of generating a route profile or cross section from an OS map? I know I could do it with pencil and paper but I want something much more accurate than that. Software generated perhaps.
I ask because I would like a profle of the short climb from St Margaret's Loch to Dunsapie Loch on Arthur's Seat in Edinburgh.

If you could I would be very grateful. The start is on the road in the area co-ordinate NT 277 739. The finish is in grid area NT 281 732 where the road meets the loch.
I would also be grateful for an exact distance and height gained. At the moment I have distance = 1.2 Km and height gained = 80 metres. The figures can be used to generate a power output for the climb with a bit of JavaScript on the web site.

Not bad - I make it 1.18 Km and 78 metres. However, that could be down to inexact placement of the waypoints. I suspect that the best way to confirm the figure would be to measure it using a GPS.

That is fantastic - exactly what I was looking for. It even has the little changes in gradient which make it such a nasty little climb on a bike. I'm glad my height and distance estimates were not too far out but I will plug your figures in to get the power output formula spot on.

Although I can;t make it for the next couple of weeks, I aim to measure your route with a GPS and I'll let you know what I come up with. Now I've read the exact start & finish points, I should get it spot on.

Thanks Druidh. I've not been keeping up with advances in GPS in the last five years. But it sounds like the accuracy is better as regards height than they were. Are the civilian systems on a par with the military ones now?
