Dear group,
Apologies if this has been done elsewhere if so I must have missed it.
Like a lot of you, following the cr*p effort by CTC to fight the Highway
Code changes, I wrote to my MP (Mark Williams, Lib Dem, Ceredigion) about
why the changes to rules 61 and 63 were a bad thing and asking whether he
would consider signing Menzies Campbell's EDM. He subsequently has and
today I received a reply to my letter:
[Heavy paraphrasing to save my fingers]
"I agree with you that as currently drafted, Rules 61 and 63 do not
adequately represent the safest way to cycle. As you point out... could
lead to negligence claims & encourage cyclists to behave in a way
inappropriate to conditions. Confirm signing EDM 1433.
You may be aware that, following the complaints of many cyclists, the
government has decided to change these rules. There will now be a short
period of consultation with interested parties and the amended rules will be
laid before parliament by 15th June at the latest. Please find enclosed a
copy of the letter sent to me by the government regarding these changes FYI.
I hope that the govt will now take this opportunity to listen to the views
of the people who actually have experience and knowledge of cycling in
traffic and come back with a much improved proposal...."
All very good and glad I voted for the guy. In the enclosures it confirms
unsurprisingly that CTC are among those consulted. As tomorrow is the
deadline for this, and as someone with more than a passing interest, am I
alone in only just hearing about any of these latest developments?
