  1. I still think we should split this thread into FASTEST SPEED DESCENT, and FASTEST SPEED ON FLAT GROUND WITH NO INCLINE INVOLVED WHAT-SO-EVER.... that way I could report 63.1mph on a descent and 41.66mph on flat ground with no wind assistance (at the end of a 44 mile group ride, we had just regrouped and I got my wind back, broke from the back and passed everyone, all aldrenaline and ego)

  2. I topped 78kph on a mountain bike (with slick tyres) on a descent riding into Merrimbula. I wonder what I would have got to on my road bike. So far got to 70kph on descent from Turramurra shops on road bike. This was in a 50 km speed limit zone (lucky I did't have any licence plates). My aim is to trigger speed cameras to take my photo. I'm sure this does happen. And yes for all the non-Aussies these place names are real.

  3. Sorry about the late post, but I am new to the forum.

This thread reminded me of a ride I did in Idaho a few years back. Coming down from a pass I hit 63 mph. It felt great, but the best part was the look on these 2 kids faces from the back seat of their car when I passed them riding on the shoulder.

As a rider who is not the lightest (200 lbs), climbing is always a challenge. It was during that ride that I discovered the road sign that I hate the most.....PASSING LANE AHEAD! That always meant there was a long, steep hill right around the corner. My only solice was being able to pass tandems 😄 on the way up, only to have them return the favor on the other side of the hill. They are fun to draft behind, though 🙄

  4. So far my top speed has only been 37 mph, that was fast enough for me.

I am sure that as I spend more time on the bike I will get much faster speed on the hills and mountains in Arizona where I live.

LMAO - I'm in Jacksonville. The only hills here are the bridges over the Intra-Coastal Waterway. Best speed is going west with the seabreeze at your back. My top speed - J.T. Butler Blvd. - overpass - 53.7 MPH - What a rush. 2 weeks later they banned bicycles on JTB, so now I have to ride another ICW overpass in Ponte Vedra. Not as quick because it's not as exposed to the wind.

  6. The fastest I have hit (mind you on a hybrid and not very aerodynamic) was about 70kph coming out of Yokohama on Route 1. The road becomes a four lane highway for the climb/descent...makes chasing cars at highway speeds hella fun. I must admit, keeping pace with 18-wheelers scared the be-jesus outta me...
As for Vela posting in CT, USA...you gotta try some of the hills in Burlington! (myhometown) Bristol doesnt give you nearly enough length...
And for all you poor FL hill-less people...the highest recorded *hill* in FL is only 300 feet! Stick with the overpasses (sucks they closed the bridge in Jax)...
Take care all you speed demons!

    ride like the wind

  7. My best is 96/97km/h. im not 100% as i was drafting a mate who recorded above reading on HIS computer. There was just the two of us on a training ride and we decided to swap some turns going down a short (1km ish) and fairly steep (no idea about grade) decent. He ended up hitting that speed near the bottom with me tucked in nicely on his tail.

The freakiest thing i have ever seen in regards to speed was after a club race i motorpaced a friend home behind my landcruiser. He had a 53x11 gear and as i wound him out coming into town he recorded 101.6km/h! Scary fast........i drove off until he wasnt on my tail any more then slowed down to the town speed limit of 60km/h only to have him pass me a few hundred metres down the rode. He musta still been doing about 80km/h! that was funny.

My best behind a vehicle is 93km/h behind a truck and trailer combo coming off a slow section of road works. The truck just accelerated very slowly until i couldnt comfortably spin my 53x12 any more and i sat up and waited for my friends.

  8. 92.6km/h on Tuesday morning - Sandton Drive about 1 km descent (unsure of gradient) with bends behind a tandem. (I attacked them at the bottom and managed to stay in front for about 5 pedal strokes.)
94.1 on Wednesday, again behind the tandem.
91.1 on Thursday, no tandem, solo. Attacked the bunch at the top of the hill.

This was meant to be a base week, but it all went pear shaped for everyone.

As for cadence, my sensor is being repaired, so not known. But I ride a 55X11 which helps.

We have hit 113km/h on a tandem a few times. 56X11 gearing and two fellows pumping away at those pedals helps.

Have done over 90km/h on several other occasions motorpacing.

oh, and 270km/h on this baby. . . No downhill required. 😄

    Hey Ratty

Glad to see i could kick your a-- at something since it was'nt going to be on a bicycle, i'll have to saddle up my Honda Blackbird for some a-- whooping, 296km/h true speed.

And 92km/h at the Platinum race in Rustenburg 52 - 11.

😄 Yup, that puppy has VERY LOOONG legs. Nice. I only get to ride mine once a month or so, too busy peddling.

    Ride safe bud.

  11. I believe I hit 69km/h or so on my mountain bike, heading down a huge hill and picking up lots of speed of course.

    Ta!

    Ta!

You my dear, are Origanically Psyco!! 😄

  13. I hit the mid 50s on the Skyline Drive in Virginia. Scared the Hell out of me. Had visions of me being road-kill and having to wait for a park ranger to come by to find me. (There was another cyclist there who screwed up his freewheel and since commercial vehicles are not allowed in the park, he had to wait three days for a new part to be delivered to the Ranger Station at Front Royal and for a park ranger to drive the piece to him at the campground. That's buraucracy for you.)

  14. Just came back from a ride, top speed 85.3km/hr. Down Shepards Hill Road in South Australia. Thank god the two sets of lights at the bottom were green.

  15. I had changed my gearing and had gone on a club ride and got dropped on the first hill climb so I was solo for a while. Once I got to the fun fun part, the down hill, I tried my my new gears 53X11 and was able to catch up with the group. It wasn't until we stoped for a break that one of the guys asked what speeds did we all hit. That's when i found out my computer read 53.6. Now that scared the [censored] outta me! I had also changed the crank arms to 172.5.

  16. 69km/h then my gears was out of range =).,.

  17. I hit mid 50's everytime I ride. Locally I have several climbs, and I've been labeled a climber. Naturally I look for ascents, ans with every acent there is a decent

  18. on a hill today, 10 minutes to get up, 90 seconds to come down. 52 km/h i'm 14 🙂

  19. 87km/h on a steep but short twisty downhill in Pretoria (Rigel avenue). Early morning training ride on my own, got passed climbing the last 30m or so by a guy on a road bike (mine is a mtb with slicks), decided to chase him to the top 'cause I knew what was ahead, caught up with him as we cleared the top and tucked in behind him, he saw me and asked if we are going to go for it and needless to say I said "Yeah." We took turns and pulled each other down, what a rush, at the bottom I enjoyed it so much I missed my turn-off and had to make a detour through town.

Slightly of the topic but what is the highest speeds you have done and whipped out.
I came of my bike just as I was starting to peak in my training for the Argus in Feb this year (about 4 weeks before the race). I was doing about 64km/h according to my brother who was in front of me (my cat eye got busted from the fall). Plenty of gravel to remove from my chest, upper legs and backside, 3 stitches under the chin, 4 stitches on lt base of thump, badly sprained lt wrist and fractured rt wrist (still giving me hassles). As for my baby: buckled front rim slightly bent handle barr and a couple of scratches. A week and a half later I did a 112km race!

  20. 75km / hr.

Pack of 40 went up the hill at the back of terranora just over the border from queensland. 3km of steady climbing, and there were 20 of us left, downhill was a screamer. I had no idea I was travelling that fast 🙂

When we finished the ride, there were only 7 of us left, and I came 4th, 5th and 3rd in the sprints 🙂
