I used to have a hybrid which was pretty much like that. It had quite skinny
tyres compared with a mountain bike so couldn't cope with tough off road
stuff but had enough grip to cope with cycle tracks and the like. Cost about
£200 5 years ago. No idea what they are now.

I agree you shouldn't buy a MTB if you are going to cycle on road, you'll be
wasting half your energy overcoming the rolling resistance in the tyres!

If you're anywhere near a branch of the Edinburgh Bicycle Co-op, their
Revolution Courier Race is exactly what you want and excellent value
for money. If you're not, go to a good local bike shop and say you want
a 700c hybrid with rigid forks. All the major ranges have such a bike,
e.g.

Suspension forks add weight and really have no benefit for on-road
riding; steel forks are more comfortable than aluminium ones, and
carbon forks more comfortable than either.

A hybrid may well be what you are looking for. I suggest you invest in
cycling mags & trawl the adverts to see what is generally out there - also
the Net. Dawes, Edinburgh Bicycle are good, basic, value names. Go to local
bike shops, *try out* bikes to get an idea of fit & pricing. I would not
recommend buying a bike from Halfords.

Cycling Plus did a group test of bikes just like that.
I would suggest getting a copy, and having a good read.
The Halfords Carrera Subway 2 comes in at £300.
They also have a nice bike with Shimano Nexus hub gears.
There's a similar Ridgeback with hub gears.

Or look at last year's models from Evans etc.

I wouldn't rule out drop handlebars. People think of them as just for the
"racing" types but I have never had any other type and have neither raced
nor even gone out with those quite fast-riding Sunday groups. The drops do
give you a lot of ways to ride and position yourself on the bike. =
comfort.

for a 15 minute daily commute and short trips around town. I haven't
(yet) found anything about it I don't like.

Depends on what tyres you're using shurely?

Conti sport contact 1.3's @85psi, Spesh FatBoys @100psi. Both of these
are very nice "fast" tyres for a 26" wheel.

I'd say that the more upright position of the MTB and the gearing are
what's going to hold you back.

Um, my bad. I wasn't thinking solely about "real" MTB's vs. Hybrid and
should have said so.

Are you claiming that MTB's don't run out of gears on the road?
In my experience they do on descents and even on the flat, conditions
permitting.

I was talking to my friend Gareth this afternoon. He was feeling quite
pleased with himself, having been motor-paced over ten miles the
previous night at a steady 47 miles per hour. On the same bike (with
the same gears[1]) on which he won the last two rounds of the Scottish
Cross Country championship, and on which we trust he will win again on
Sunday.

It ain't the bike that runs out of gears...

[1] And, to make you even sicker, he only has a double chainset on it,
not a triple, to save weight.
