  1. Hello everyone,

I have been reading alt.support.diet.low-carb on and off since 2003.
It's a great newsgroup and I feel like I know many of you. I
especially enjoy reading all the tips and success stories.

I went on Atkins a couple years ago and lost 30 pounds, but I went back
to eating carbs and unfortunately regained almost all the weight. So I
am starting again this year. Back in 2003, there were a lot less LC
products on the market... not that I am complaining! :-) My question
for everyone is about a product I have been eating called GG Bran
Crispbread. I like them with tuna or cream cheese. They are 85% fiber
and although they are advertised as "Zero Net Carbs", I am pretty sure
there are actually 3, which still seems reasonable to me.

    http://www.brancrispbread.com/bran_crispbread_fiber_nutritional_facts.html

Anyway, I see some of the new Induction menus have things like Atkins
bread and muffins included, so I was wondering if these Crispbreads are
    acceptable as well?

    Thanks a bunch!

Returning to carbs alone does not put on wieght!
Did you maintain any sort of reasonable exercise program or watched calorie
    intake?

Just curious as many people lose weight and expect to keep it off when they
go back to their old habits.

    <snip>

For me I'm sure it would - I excercised before I went low-carb, and
I excercise now (a bit more than before though).

  4. hi DB... I'm probably a little older than you [retired lady], but for
me it does seem to have been my return to carbs. Like Ernst, I may
even exercise a little more as I used to just go on walks and now I am
doing water aerobics as well. When I was LC-ing in 2003, I didn't have
any sugar/starches, and then when I quit, I slowly started adding an
occasional sweet to my daily food intake, and then pasta, and then 25+
pounds! But in all fairness to the point you are making, I did not
keep a food journal after I quit Atkins and would probably find that my
calorie intake did go up too. I *will* use Fitday faithfully this
    time. :-)

Have you any thoughts on the crispbread?

As far as induction goes, neither of them is on the acceptable foods
list, so technically, no. Atkins Nutritionals bought the rights to the
Atkins name and then fiddled with the diet to include THEIR PRODUCTS.
They are out to make money, plain and simple. I don't blame them for
that aspect, but I DO blame them for misleading people to enhance their
bottom line. From what I've heard, the diet plan is the same, but their
menus include their products. That's somewhat underhanded.

That said, it probably won't hurt to have the crispbread if you really
    want to :-)

They look to be 0 g carb per serving to me.

Given that they're made of bran, and bran isn't 100% fiber, they may
have some carb - under 1/2 gram per serving probably. I'd count them
as one if it were me.

Induction is supposed to be meat and veggies, period. So... if you
want to do a "true" Atkins induction, this isn't part of it.

That being said, I don't see any reason you have to do induction
anyways. Atkins isn't the only way to low-carb. However, if you're
trying to stay under 20 grams a day and eating these things and
counting them as 3 each... well, that's going to seriously cut into
your veggie intake. I think at 20 g a day, ya hafta pretty much spend
    all your carbs on veggies.

While I don't do crispbread, I do low-carb tortillas and DaVinci syrups
    - and I'd do the low-carb chicken cheese enchilada soup from Progresso
if I could find it anymore. Mostly, I do meat, eggs, veggies, dairy
and some lower-carb fruits. But... I aim at 50-60 g carb per day, so
splurging a few grams on a tortilla doesn't limit my veggies
particularly - and it's not an everyday thing either.

Oh thank you for that information! I was totally misled. I did wonder
why a lot of seemingly non-Induction items were on so many sample
    menus. Now it makes sense.

I do love the crispbread... my thoughts are that I will LC this time
including a crispbread or two a day, as well as reversing my meals as
per an article I read in a magazine. It made sense to me to eat my
breakfast last thing as it is typically the smallest meal of the day
for me, and I like the idea of mixing things up.

And Saffire, thanks for all the tips you post, as well as your personal
pictures! I love seeing before and after photos. Very inspiring!

  8. Thanks for responding... I have tried some LC tortillas called La
Tortilla, 3 net carbs. I like to eat them stuffed with broccoli and
melted mozzarella cheese. They are surprisingly filling, much more so
than the crispbread actually, and seem more like bread. I guess I was
thinking I should follow a strict induction since that is how I lost
the weight before, but I may be slightly less-than-perfect this time.
Luckily, I did use Fitday in 2003... so all my meals and weight loss
stats are still available. I can compare to those numbers and adjust
based on my progress this time. If I can eat 2 crispbreads and keep my
daily carbs to <25, I think i should be able to lose at the same pace
    [or close anyway ;-)].

Part of the reason for induction is thought by some to be the creation
of a significant early weight loss, and for many, a sense of feeling good.

These early weight loss and early feelings cement the determination that
the program will work for the individual, and that the most stringent
part is now over - so the sense that "I can do this" is reinforced.

Pammy, you don't need this psychological boost.

I wouldn't see any real reason for you not to move either directly or at
least rapidly into Phase II - Ongoing Weight loss.

So, your treasured low carb treats could account for 5 grams of added
    carbs pretty quickly.

I would suggest great caution in not going overboard with these "treats"
in your program. It is pretty easy to go overboard with these things.

In spite of what I said above, I feel that you would be well off to lose
a few pounds with pretty strict following of induction. You prove to
yourself that you have the "right stuff" for getting started.

A week.... or two.... You can do it.

You will have rewards in your treats quickly added to your program fast
.... provided you keep them under control, and not let them become a
    ruination of your mindset.

    Good wishes.

That's not true. Many cheeses, in limited amounts, are allowed on
induction. So is cream. And certainly fish is
    allowed and encouraged.

The section that gives the rules for Induction says only foods
from the allowed list, and the allowed list doesn't have any
    grains listed.

But if you go into the back of the DANDR books in the menu
section you'll find sample menus that have items made with
    grain.

So is that a mistake or what? Clearly Dr Atkins didn't write the
menu section. Heck, he nearly bragged about never cooking.
Either he failed to proofread that section so it's a mistake that
made it into the book or he wrote strict rules but when the
rubber hit the road he wasn't actually strict. Your judgement
on which one to decide upon.

So, how strict do you want to be at the start, do you want to go
with the exception or what? Knowing that Induction starts
strict and then OWL moves progressively less strict I've always
suggested newbies do that. Start strict then evolve less strict
on schedule. But you aren't a newbie. If you avoided grain
in your first Induction do you really need to for reInduction?

  14. hi Doug,

When I did induction in 2003, I did have certain problems that the
crispbread alleviate completely, if you know what I mean. I like the
idea of a strict induction though as I am basically the kind of person
who does well following rules... but when I saw the new menus and such,
I was hopeful I could now have the crispbread yet still be within the
realm of some "new and improved" induction. :-)

I am closing in on the end of my first day, no crispbread... and I feel
pretty good. I guess a day or two will tell me whether I need that
    crispbread back!

If you're doing the requried amounts of veggies, shouldn't be much
problem. But if there is, adding fat solves this problem too. It
    sorta lubrictaes everything.

  16. I get 3 net carbs also. The Fiber isn't indented in under the Total Carbs,
so it looks to have already been subtracted. All New Zealand, Australian
and some European labels already subtract the fibre in this way.

    Looking at calories:

    16 cals
    - 0g fat (0 cals)
    - 1g protein (4 cals)
This leaves 12 cals for carbs. Each carb gram has 4 calories, so that
leaves 3g carbs. So I'd say the fibre has already been subtracted.

Where you plugged or empty? Simply not going often is only
a problem if there's stuff inside and you're plugged. Empty is
not a problem. Back when I did Induction I went every other
day. I was too empty for more. Not a problem once I realized
I wasn't plugged and moving on to OWL on schedule meant
enough roughage that it stopped being an issue.

I defire strict as strictly following the directions. The basic
non-variation directions. So strict adherence to me means
being on OWL the morning of day 15. If restrictiveness is
an issue then this type of strict becomes steadily less
    restrictive.

Improved or just easier? The two overlap but aren't quite the
same thing. Maybe improved is "works better at the expense
of more thought and effort"; maybe improved is "easier but
now works for 97% not 98% of folks"...

If you used the carb ladder the first time around then you know
whether you have problems with grains. The reason I urge
first timers to follow the process strictly on schedule is grain
intolerance problems are common and eating crispbread in
the first week can mean never figuring out if you have grain
intolerance issues. It takes a while without an allergen to clear
out symptoms so if you've always eaten grain what should be
symptoms are your normal. But being in your second time
through that's something you already learned so there's no
point for you this time around.

I'm beginning to think Doug may be related to Yogi Berra.

  19. I think you are absolutely right, so it's really kind of dishonest that
they promote them as zero carbs. If it is a European standard they are
following, then they know the zero carb label is deceptive.

That said, I still like them. I don't trust them, but I like them.
