intermediates and juniors. Now, 30 years later, I think I could finally take
him ...but he seems too afraid to line up against me.

Seriously though, I've had to bite my tongue a lot lately with all the
bashing that he has endured. We were friends in those early years (despite
our obvious differences in talent!) and he was a great person. It was an
exciting time to be a junior. I could drone on with lots stories and stuff
but that would be too pathetic and masters-fattie'ish.

This was a noteworthy race because it was the season opener
in Norcal when Lemond first started racing. Gordis wrote
a short article about getting his ass kicked in his first
bike race by Lemond who was also doing his first race.
There is a scrap of a newspaper clipping with the results
listing and our own Mark Fennell was there.

Well, if he is going to claim to have been screwed in 1985
then he deserves it for that. That only flies in the US and
only because we seem to be exceptionally ignorant about the
events.

I have always felt the bashing he took for criticising LANCE's
relationship with Ferrari said more about the bashers than
about Lemond, who certainly knows more about the service that
Ferrari provides than the average US dumbass.

Slight correction... The day before at William Land Park crit in Sacramento
was Lemond's first race, which he also won from a break of three. I was
third in that break (demonstrating my sprinting prowess at an early age).

He told me that day that he had trained really hard all winter. "In Carson
City, with the snow and cold?" I asked. "No, on the rollers everyday for two
hours" he said. Sheeesh, a 14-year-old on the rollers for two hours a day.

Well, at 14, he probably wouldn't have fulfilled one of the requirements -
being drunk. I'm not suggesting that 14 year olds don't get drunk, i just don't
think that one was.
