I got something like that purporting to come from keith hobman.

Your email address appears over 5000 times in a google groups search.
All that is happening, is you are being spammed, but the software that
is spamming you is using names and email addresses from this newsgroup.
Email is easily forged.

google phil.east.verizon.net see how many ppl moan about the spam
from there.

It's just coincidence, since I doubt that John Williams is a
professional spammer.

If he wanted to target you then i'm sure he's have thought of a subject
more enticing than 'RE: Message Notify'. He might have created a more
innovative trap - given your interests, perhaps taking into account
your age and gender.

pool-68-236-56-138.phil.east.verizon.net. John doesn't live there;
his posts come from 24.140.41.173 which is cable-41-173.sssnet.com, an
entirely different network.

It appears that someone on Verizontal is infected and has both your
and John's email addresses on his machine.

I don't know why as it is not an address I use. It was the email
address that I used here when I was posting under my own name, which
was used for a small number of incoming posts only.
