  1. Hi,
    I am 26 years old male, 5ft 8in. I graduated college around 4
years ago, in school I had an active life style. Basket ball,
volleyball, chasing the chicks and so on was part of my life and I was
slim, about 145 lbs. My stomach was also flat. After starting my job my
life became very sedentary, 4 years have passed and I found my self
    gaining 30 pounds. I weighted 175 to 180lbs. About 10 months ago I
found out I had high cholesterol and triglyceride level. My Doctor
scared the [censored] out of me told me to bring down the cholesterol. It
woke me up and I started a strict low fat diet and started jogging and
swimming. It all worked out well, in 10 months my cholesterol is way
down and I weight 155 lbs. I look alot like the way I looked in college
except that my lower ab section and my love handles are not going away.
I do cardio, eat small portion meal through out the day. I do sit ups
and leg raises. My question is that How in the world can I lose my
belly and those love handles. They love me soo much and don't want to
leave me. I have tried so many different things and now find myself
frustrated. Can anybody related to my problem and offer a solution. I
want my lower part of belly/love handles gone. My upper ab is fine and
I can already see the muscle but the lower ab is the problem. Please
    help.

    Steve.

The first place you put it on is the last place you take it off. Just keep
going at it and cut your food intake a bit more.

  3. Thanks for your input. Believe me I have cut down on fat and my food
intake a lot. Its been almost 10 months since I begin my diet. Do I
need to start working with weights ? for my lower abs and love handles?

You can't spot reduce. The reason you have those is because you're still
fat. They look more pronounced because you already lost the fat on your
upper torso, which makes it appear that your love handles are sticking out.
There were there before. You just had more fat above them, so they didn't
    seem to protrude.

What the other guy said is true. Fat is first on, last off. What you are
seeing is where you first put on fat. You have to diet until it all comes
    off.

Want to lose weight? It's simply a matter of calories in vs. calories out.
You need to create and maintain a caloric deficit. IOW, consume less than
you need to maintain. If you keep that up long enough, they will go away.

And yes, weights would be a great addition.

  5. I had the same issue... I'm 26 and for years I did various combinations
of cardio and different resistance routines, trying to get rid of a
little bit of belly fat. Then two months ago I started counting
calories and keeping a journal and I was *shocked* at how effective
    this was...

I limited myself to 2,000 calories a day, and after 6 weeks I lost over
15 lbs (I went from 175 to 158). Since then I've increased my daily
limit up to 2,200/2,300 in order to lose less and/or put on muscle, but
I still count every calorie and write it all down in a journal. It
seems to me that you can try to eat less all you want, but unless you
are really accounting for exactly what you are eating, you can't be
sure you're eating the right amount to lose weight.

I should mention that during those previous years I obsessed over
calories, but it was always within the context of a single meal rather
than considering a whole day at a time, so by the time dinner or
dessert rolled around I'd forgotten that I ate 2 giant peanut butter
    and jellies for lunch.

  6. Thanks for the replies. I understand the concept of calories IN vs
calories out. I have been doing just that. I don't want to lose weight
anymore, just the love handles/belly. As far as my fat intake goes I
have reduced it very much. If I diet more then what I do now, I will
look like I just came from Somalia.

    Liposuction.

  8. After reading all the replies and doing my own research I have come to
the conclusion that I need to do more dieting. So for now I will cut
back my food intake from 5 times a day to 4 times a day. Believe me
guys I am stuck with 155 pounds and my lower belly/love handles for 3
months now. And I will do anything to make this disappear.

How can I measure my body fat at home ?

The US navy method is said to be pretty accurate:

Better to stick with five times a day but cut-down portion size.
Eating temporarily boosts metabolism. Also make sure you're eating
a balanced diet. Restricting your diet too far, or depriving
yourself of dietary components, can be counter-productive. IIRC,
the "ideal" is considered a balanced diet with a 500 to 1000 calorie
per day deficit (for weight loss).

Add some weight training to your regimen. More muscle means more
energy consumed, even when you're at rest. Add some stretching
exercises. The improved muscle tone and flexibility will allow you
to carry yourself better. Which brings us to: Improve your posture.
Just sitting up straight and walking upright will consume more
calories than slouching. Most people have terrible posture. (Try
this experiment: Instead of just trying to pull your gut in, try also
pulling yourself up by your shoulders.) The combination of improved
muscle tone, flexibility and posture will do wonders for your
    appearance.

I dropped 20 pounds, and lost a good deal of my "apparent" gut, just
by doing relatively light floor exercises three times a week, which
included stretching, getting about a half-mile per day of walking in,
and consciously straightening my posture. (Walking and sitting
    erectly is now becoming automatic.)

You mentioned you "do cardio," but offered no specifics. What kind
of aerobic exercise, how intense, how long, and how frequent?

The easiest and least expensive method is calipers. Depending on
ones facility with them, they may or may not yield an accurate
result, but, used consistently, they should, like an inaccurate
bathroom scale, at least show progress--or the lack thereof.

  11. For cardio I am running on treadmill for 30 mins 3 to 4 times a
week. I also go for occasional swimming which gets pretty intense. I
stretch and do sit ups 3 to 4 times. I have reduced my calorie intake a
bite, but something in my body tells me not to cut too much. I get a
little weakness in my legs. On the diet part I am not consuming alot, I
know that. I eat plenty fruits and veggies. Apples, bananas, broccoli,
spinach and all those good stuff that I never did touch 10 months ago.
I have lost all the weight that I wanted to lose, problem is my lower
abs. I don't think I can lose that with reduction in calorie unless I
starve. I am going to give myself couple of more months and see what
happens. I haven't touched the weights yet because I wouldn't find the
time AND I don't think I can work with weights because I am not
interested in it and for any workout to be success full you better pay
full attention and be interested in it right ?

Any suggestion on weight training ?

    Steve
