My first phone line was installed in 1982. I was 17 years old. It was a
modem line and with the phone rental and Touch-Tone came to $12.80 a
month. Yes, there was cross subsidization back then but being my calls
were all local. Long distance wasn't too expensive, maybe 50 cents for 3
minutes to call across country.
After divestiture all hell broke loose. What had once been $12 shot up
to $16, then $19, then $22 and so on. Now a basic line is close to $35
if you stay with the wireline carriers like Verizon and LD is about 5 to
10 cents a minute, way over what it actually costs to provide the
service.
But since I'm already paying for a broadband connection I went with a
VoIP carrier and now have a local calling area that spans three
continents for $30 a month. Not too bad.
