Help with Creaking

This occurs quite often and shows up on this forum frequently. First thing that you need to do is isolate the noise. Is it the pedal, crank , or BB? If you have a second pair of pedals that you can use, try them and see if the noise goes away. If not, remove your cranks and put a little grease on the splines or taper of the bottom bracket spindle where the crank arms attach to it. If this still doesn't correct the problem, remove the BB. Now there are two ways to go here. Either put grease on the threads and reinstall it, or use anti-sieze (teflon) tape on the threads of the BB.

If it is a 2007, isn't it still under warranty? If so, take it back to the LBS and let them fix it.😄

I feel your pain. I have a 2006 Roubaix and I've had the creak for a while. I just got a brand new pair of Look Keo Sprint pedals thinking that was the answer but the creak is still there. I think it's louder now. I am about to take off the cranks and if necessary rip out the BB. I must find that creak!! :eek:

I have an anectdote and a question as part of reply 🙂
+1 for me on trying to isolate the noise...

1.) My incessant creaking/ticking with similar symptoms was that the Truvativ GXP cups I use were tightened too much. I instinctively tightened all the chain ring bolts on my triple Rouleur and the BB cups when the ticking/creaking started - it definately was coming from pressure being applied on the drive side of the pedal/crankset. Freespinning, it did not occur. It drove me crazy until I realized that it got worse after tightening the BB cups after 2 sessions of futzing. So, I did what Truvativ suggests , reinstalled the BB using one of those really nice Park BBT-19 wrenches and a torque wrench. The proper torque was absolutely key. 15-19N/M was perfect. No more ticking. Not sure if this is true with all BB set ups but I thought I'd share it anyhow.

2.) Has anyone else had issues, (if any of you use a Truvativ GXP (Giga X Pipe) integrated external bearing BB cranksets))- with the bearing seals popping off on the drive side ? I have 6 bikes with these BB's and two of them have the outboard plastic bearing seals popped off. One on my Ridley cross bike that looks like I installed it that way (the seals (round plastic washer-like things) are just gone - not on the axle, floor, stuck to the BB, it's no where to be found and all kinds of [censored] got into the bearing ass'y- must have been missing when I took the thing out of the box -think I bought it used on EBAY and never even noticed ! ) ; and one on my Cannondal CAAD 4.. weird !! I asked my LBS and they said "never heard of such a thing - and that'll teach you for buying stuff on EBay"... !😄 By the way neither bike was the one with the creaky/ticking noise.

You might try pulling the BB cups and re-installing them with a new teflon tape wrap..perhaps a turn more than what was on them if you have sufficient thread clearance. Extra grease between all metal surfaces (bearing to cup, etc.) while you're at it.

You might also want to check your bar/stem clamp...sometime the creak is actually coming from there and is the creak is coincidentally timed with the crank effort. I grease the contact patch and torque all bolts as evenly as possible to get a square mating.

Lastly, make certain it isn't the shoe cleat creaking in the pedal. Try some grease and/or electrical tape on the pedal to try and isolate the noise.
