  1. My daughter (4 years old, in excellent health otherwise),
has developed a persistent cough. She coughs a bit during
the day but it is mostly in the morning at just before
bedtime. She also has coughing episodes all through the
night. Before bedtime, after lying down for a while, the
coughing is no-stop to the point where her stomach/chest
    hurts and she sometimes vomits.

Her doctor prescribed 2 nebulizers, one with Flovent,
administered before bedtime and in the morning, and another,
    Ratio-salbutamol, given only before bedtime.

Unfortunately, I didn't get much feedback from the doctor (I
    didn't take her
in), and she (the doctor) isn't much for detailed
    explanations.

What are these meds for and what are they meant to treat? I
don't know if this is just a treatment or if it is going to
    become a maintenance therapy?

She mentioned something about asthma and allergies,
suggested vacuuming the bedroom carpet every day, washing
    stuffed animals, etc.

Sad when the doctor doesn't take the time to make things
clear to the parents, but it was an "emergency" visit
    squeezed in at our request.

    Thanks.

  2. Has she been vaccinated against pertussis? It may have
irritated her system in the respect you describe.

So far it sounds like asthma.

    Asthma.

    Probably both.

    Well, there you go.

Next time, go to the doctor yourself. If you're not
satisfied with their explanations, find another doctor.

Running on the theory that it's asthma/allergies...

You'll find it's less work and possibly requires less meds
to get rid of carpets completely. Then dry mop once a day,
thorough vacuuming once a week might do it.

Wash bedding frequently with hot water. Mite covers for
pillows and mattress. Watch for damp areas - allergies to
    mould. Correct the problems.

Hepa filter on the furnace. Less knickknacks, easier to
dust. Dust with swiffer or damp cloth, so dust doesn't fly
up into the air and settle back down again. Dust before
vacuuming. Some have a vacuum they can run which sucks the
air in and filters it. A friend of mine has some type of
floor model or table-top hepa filter system near the bed. My
other friend has severe reactions to perfumes, both have
trouble with various scents and candles, after shave etc.

If you're who and where I think you are, the outdoor air is
crappy (worse than any other year). Some people with
allergies close up the living area totally. I think that
sometimes makes things worse. I use a ventilating fan in the
window. It reverses, so I can blow indoor air out,
especially during allergy season or high pollution days
(which we seem to have a lot of this year so far). Actually
I moved out of high traffic areas, but I don't have severe
allergies so one has to investigate which allergies are
worse and where and when first. That can be "local" as in is
there a tree on that side of the home.

Pets: my son was worse because of cats. However, bathing
them once a month helped (not so bad), Some people say get
rid of birds, dogs and cats. Pet fur can certainly collect
dust and mites. Hence the aggressive vacuuming.

In order for that (ventilating window fan) to work, it must
not draw "crappy" air in from other sources (so close her
bedroom door when it's running and during sleep).

    J-not a doctor
PS post nasal drip often goes with allergies or nose/throat
    inflammation ?

Says who? Cough is not a documented adverse reaction to DTaP
according to any *reliable* source that I've ever seen.

And if you're suggesting that perhaps pertussis itself (and
not DTaP) could cause her intermittent cough, I think that's
    doubtful. Pertussis
    (a.k.a. "whooping cough"😉 isn't usually confused with
    asthma. To the

  7. This appears to be allergy related. If your health insurance
will cover it, I would recommend seeing an allergist. The
testing can be done by a blood test. An oral medication has
been introduced so she may need to be injected for
immunotherapy. Baring seeing an allergist, you should make
your child's room an allergy free zone. Ripping up the
carpet is best but you can vacuum daily using a vacuum with
HEPA filters. No pets. Wash all stuffed animals in HOT water
as well as bedding. If possible place her mattress in the
hot sun for a few hours and vacuum as often as possible.
Heat will kill the mites. You might also want to use the
    Febreze anti- allergy product.

    homemadesimple.comreduce allergen.shtml

No smoking in the room as well. Get a good HEPA air filter.
Choose one that moves the most air you can find. Don't waste
your money on the ionic / fan less filters. Here is some

When vaccines are trialed, side-effects within 5 days of
each injection are reported and documented. Those beyond
this are not of interest because the company can always find
"no correlation" if push comes to shove.

I did a quick search to pull you up a specific reference,
but it is only the tip of the iceberg.

"Is there a link?" does not equal "There is a link". While
numerous studies have explored a possible link between
various childhood vaccines and diseases like asthma, the
fact that no link has been found is good evidence that
there is indeed no link. Except, of course, to the anti-
vaccine crew, who never lets facts get in the way of a
    good argument.

  12. When I was about 10, I developed a constant cough. About
once every 15 seconds. We went to see the pediatrician, who
referred us to an allergy doctor.

There was a battery of tests, and they isolated and
identified the allergens. By removing a few foods from my
diet (and injections for the pollen) I was symptom free.

It wasn't a lot of fun, the testing involved about 200
scratches for skin sensetivity, followed by about 60 "skin
popper" syringes to test for sensetivity.

You do have a point. The O.P. apparently demanded that
his/her child be seen immediately, couldn't be bothered to
go to the appointment with her, but blames the doc for not
spending enough time explaing things (presumably to a third
party who probably couldn't even provide any useful
history). Perhaps the doc deserves some lattitude here.

  16. It may not be of any use to any other person, since
allergies are specific to the patient. In my case, the
screening found that I was allergic to chocolate, cinnamon,
red pepper, and potato. It was a real challenge to find
    anything to eat after that.

At present, I have lactose intolerance, and have a mild
reaction if I eat very much beef. A burger every other day
    doesn't bother me.

Other children will be allergic to other things -- so it's
not a perfect "list for everyone".

So everyone being seen on short notice should expect a

No one DEMANDED anything, just asked that she be seen as

With all due respect, sir, the study I noted shows a
fivefold increase. This study alone is not definitive, as
neither is the one HCN referenced, but there are many others
as well, all which only begin to quantify what we are seeing
    in the clinical setting.
