help with bike rack???

I put my bike in the trunk.

If you want a real good rack sportworks makes a great one and so does hollywood they seem to hold
the bike by the tires in a tray so it makes it easy to take on and off and is compatible with
multiple designs of bikes.

You can get two basic kinds:

a) the bike is clamped to the rack via the top tube, or a "adaptor bar" (sold separately) if you
don't have a top tube;

b) a tray style rack that the bike sits in.

With type "a" you need to consider the cables routing, as hydraulic lines could get crushed if the
clamp is over tightened. You also need to consider how the bike will hang from the rack. You don't
want hot exhaust blowing right onto the rim/tire. As well, consider that bikes that are hanging will
have their wheels spinning madly in the breeze. If you use an adaptor bar make sure that it won't
rub against the headset. (a nasty way to have to replace a headset). One last thing... When bikes
hang down on a rack like that they tend to "blow in the wind" behind the car. These are all
situations where bungee cords come in really handy.

With the tray type of rack you need to consider how low will the bikes be sitting in the tray?

As with any system of mounting bikes onto a vehicle security is something that always needs to be
considered. We had a loop of steel welded onto the rack, and then ran some chaning through the hitch
and locked the *RACK* onto the vehicle, so that we could safely lock the bikes to the rack. (No
point in securing bikes onto a rack if the whole rack can be just pulled off of the vehicle...)

I don't know if the rear window of your vehicle opens by itself or not. But with our car our trunk
*barely* opens all the way with both bikes in the rack.

- If somebody pulls up and kisses your bumper, what will happen to the bike?

- How many bikes does it need to hold?

- How hard is it to remove/install

- How well does it fold up for storage?

- How well does it fold up when on the vehicle (so it's not hanging out there...)
