HELP - towbar mounted racks.

products was duff and why and ask what you should do.

I've only bought racks for a Discovery and you need something custom
like the Pendle racks to get round the spare wheel. Beware of racks
that hang of the rear wheel, I found they were starting to detach the
wheel mount from the car and fortunately caught it in time by pure luck.

Assuming I am understanding your description ..... when you say "detachable
towbar" do you mean the ball part has 2 bolts that fix it to a flat plate on
the bar OR is it the type where the "ball" is actually the end of a curved
rod/bar that bolts to the mechanism under the car?

If it's the former then you can get longer bolts and spacer plate from any
caravan dealer shop - that will pad out the ball from the rear of the car (I
had a Disco with a Thule rack (one with channels for the bike) and the
extended bolts worked fine - padded out about 3 inches IIRC)

OTOH if it's the "curved bar" I think you are stuffed (other than taking off
the spare wheel, perhaps)

Similarly those which 'clamp' onto the tow-ball itself. They _do_ come
loose, especially when traversing rough ground to get to the pits of an MTB
race.

We now have (for our Disco) a towbar mounted device that allows us to slot
various fittings in from MTB to Trials motorbikes sized racks which don't
move at all unless the chassis breaks ... and which still allow us to tow
the caravan ... 😉 Home designed and made unfortunately so I couldn't tell
you where to get them from.

It's the latter. You can remove the ball when not in use.

Thule never mentioned that you needed any specific type of ball/bar. Three
inches would be plenty - it looks like I only need about an inch.

It's annoying when you've asked the right questions, but got the wrong
answers.
