I recently purchased a New Minoura Mag 850R (remote) It came completely assembled in the box. I changed the skewers and installed my road bike on the new trainer. I think I'm following the directions right leaving little space between the tire (700 x 23c) and the drive roller. As I pushed the foot pedal down the roller makes contact with my tires.
Problem: I rode for about 5 minutes then I stopped to see if there are any problems, which is when I realized the roller is hot and my tires are prematurely wearing. Am I doing something wrong? I think I've burnt more rubber on the roller in 5 min than I've burnt on the road over the last 6 months. Any assistance is greatly appreciated..I can't ride outside its freezing cold -15 with wind chill.

Message to Garcia: 😉
If I'm reading you right, there was only light contact between the tire and roller, which will allow for significant slippage and wear. There should be solid contact, such that the tire bulges slightly as it would when you are sitting on the bike during a normal road ride. The typical recommendation is to tighten the roller knob until it just makes contact, and then *tighten 2-3 more complete turns of the knob* to ensure solid contact.
Note that trainers will still wear tires faster than the road, so don't use an expensive race tire on the rear wheel during trainer season. Happy training. 🙂
To check the tension, grab the wheel with your handle and quickly tug it forward and then backward. If there is slippage, tighten it up some more and try again.

Frenchyge, Thanks. I had a gap between the roller of about 2mm per the instructions so when the roller made contact it didn't bulge much. I have tighten the adjuster as much as I can but still have a gap. Should I use the adapter that came with the Mag 850? the instructions says its for smaller wheel size between 24 x 1.0 and 26 x 1.75. My wheels are 700-23c which i'm assuming its a size 29? Thanks for the advise I will see how much I can adjust later on tonight when I get off work. P.S. "Message to Garcia" is a good book...Thanks again!

Repeat as necessary.
Yojimbo, Thanks. Never thought of that...I'll definitely give it a try tonight. Thanks for the assistance.

Beyond the above suggestions, consider a more durable tire. Tacx and Conti make specific trainer tires for your rear wheel. Currently, I'm using last summer's Michelin Carbon tire which is holding up nicely without the usual rubber bits on the floor.

Don't use the small-wheel adapter. I was assuming that there's an adjustment knob for tensioning the resistance unit against the tire like most other trainers have, but that doesn't appear to be the case. The Mag850 has a 'foot pedal' instead. The instructions don't talk about that 'foot pedal' and how it is to be used, except for this: " Foot Pedal
Foot Pedal is a very convenient device to engage/disengage the roller to the tire. You don't need to worry about the micro adjustment everytime you use the trainer. Just set the bike and push down the pedal, you will be able to get proper pressure setting in seconds.
Are you supposed to step down on that foot pedal after you've achieved that 2mm gap in order to force the unit against the tire? 😕 I'd try something like that, or e-mail Minoura.

Frechyge, I got it. First I went to my LBS and got a cheap but durable tire for about 15 bucks. I adjusted the micro-adjust screw without my bike wheel on the roller. If it was compressed too much I took it off and adjusted just enough. once I had enough contact I stepped on the foot pedal and double check the compression on the wheel..again if it was too much compression I started back at step one. I rode for an hr today, once I was done training I took a look at the tire and it had ZERO wear on it.
Funny story: I told my wife I had to buy a thong and she looked at me funny and went "OKKKKKKKAAAAAAAAYYYY" I had to explain to her that it was for my bike to capture my sweat..she then said "what's next?, you gonna kick me out of the bed?" (bike stays in our bedroom..LOL).
