  1. Evening All,

My oldest lad has just moved homes within Swansea and from his new bedroom
he can look (he describes it) North ( I think it's more NE) towards a
mountain in the distance. He has tried to explain the mountain - long ridge
sloping down to the left - and asked me to identify it for him. From his
description he is looking up towards the Pontardawe area but I am unsure?

I know this is a localised question but thought someone my know?

I think his new place is called Milton Terrace if this is any help - its
    near the City Centre?

    Long shot I know but....

    thanks
    Alan

Not at all fare from the city centre ; it's at approx: SS 635 935

I'm not at all sure of what can be seen from there in the N or NE
direction, but it could well be Mynydd Drummau or Graig-y-Pal (Graig
Ola) which are both on the eastern side of Swansea valley and abvout 5 -
    6 miles from Swansea.

Could be Mynydd Pysgodlyn - it is NE of Swansea and would appear to slope
down to the left from his viewpoint, but at 262m it's a hill, rather than a
    mountain.

If he's looking due North, then my guess would be Tair Carn Uchaf and Tair
Carn Isaf on the western edge of the Black Mountains. At 482m and 460m
respectively they're still hills I guess, but respectable ones.

    But they're both just guesses.

Streetmap gives the coordinates as: 265291,193583
Looking at the map it's in the Mayhill area, near Plantasia.
    Paul? Bill? Any ideas?

True Gary - guesses :-) A difficult guess to make though.

Both are West of Swansea. and from Milton Terrace, there is Mayhill to
get past - not possible I'm afraid.

I'm not at all sure of what can be seen, but I'm much more sure of what
    can't be.

It just so happens that we have a resident mountain spotter who lives
pretty close. He'll be along in a bit.

Milton Terrace is not quite in the Mayhill area - more in the Mount
Pleasant part of Swansea and nowhere near Plantasia which was built on
the old North Dock in Swansea. behind the Strand.

    Cheers Bill,

I just rung him and he thinks the mountain is a good bit further than that -
he says he can see for a good few miles and has views of the new stadium
being built and all up that way for many miles. He says there is a smaller
hill in front of the one he is trying to identify. He did ask about the
Beacons but although I know that you can see the Bay from just South of Fan
y Big & on Craig y Fan Ddu I wouldnt have thought if he would be able to see
that far from his home - I very much doubt it....anyway wrong shape from
what he described. Saying that I am hopless on directions n stuff?

I am driving down to Pontardulais on Wednesday for a meeting so I can have a
look that way from the M4?

Looking NNE : Careg Lais(2076ft) with Foel Fraith(1982ft) or Cefn Carn
    Fadog(1657ft) in front ?
Looking NE : Fan Gihiryg(2379ft) with Carreg-lwyd(1763ft) in front ?

They are at 25 to 30km far away, but on a clear day ? Again a shot in the
    dark.

From his location the obvious one would be Kilvey Hill, but...

....for a longer view it would be Mynydd Drumau.

    Quoted message said:

The problem is that particular location doesn't have very good views
north, but I notice that the road does curve around, so much depends on
exactly where the house is located. If you could give me a more
accurate grid ref, or even a house number...

    Quoted message said:

    Long shot I know but....

    Not long at all.

Further NE you can see Mynydd Allt-y-Grug.

Much depends on exactly where you are located in Swansea. Being hilly,
there are lots of line of sight issues. It's quite possible to see Fan
Gyhirych and Fan Hir from parts of Swansea. You can see Fan Hir from
Dyfatty traffic lights (ideally on top of one of the footbridges that
    cross it).

From the top of Trewyddfa Road you can see the whole of Mynydd Du, even
    the western summits.

As I said, it all depends on exactly where his home is and how much of
the view is blocked. You can easily see the Beacons from many parts of
    Swansea though.

You won't see much from the M4, and what you will see from the M4 at
Morriston won't be the same because of line of sight issues. You'll
have a less obstructed view but from lower down and a slightly different
direction. He'll be higher up but have different blockages.

can see the very western end of the range.

Mynydd Bach - MYNYDD BACH .....don't change the subject :-)

Even though I live 5 miles further up the valley than you, I still can't
see Fan Gyhirych but if I go down the road a bit it is in full view.

I think the main horizon from the lower Swansea valley in a N/NE
direction is about the Glais region, and as I said earlier I think
Mayhill blocks any decent northerly view up the valley.

When I lived in Swansea I could never see over town hill, the only
hill I saw was Kilvey with resplendent views of the hot steel being
    poured to the west.

Kilvey is pretty well east of Townhill, so where were you seeing steel
being poured West of Swansea unless it was Llanelli !

The only Steelworks were in Morriston NE of Swansea. They were tinplate
works and Rolling mills - long since gone after the D o E told Swansea
    to pull it's finger out.

    S. E of Townhill (roughly) you would see the Port Talbot steel works
    where they make steel.
