I'm also a novice at this. However I would suggest that you need to set some goals, when you have those set you can look at training programs.
I am working through the training program to cycle a century. My goal was to complete a 54 mile charity ride, this is now well in sight and I'm aiming higher for next year.
Do a google search for "Training for a century" assuming thats what you want to do of course.

Thank you i took your advice and have got a decent programme am fortunate to be in southafrica they are lot of races here. Can i ask do u cycle in a group or alone? -
I do most of my training alone, although once a week I get out for a longer ride with two of the people I'm doing the charity ride with. The reason for cycling alone on weekdays is basically down to differing times of arrival home form work.
That having been said I find it easier to ride with others as if you start flaging at least you have a wheel to hang on to.

There's some great books out there that will give you the info you need.
7-Week Cycling for Fitness

I have a 2006 Marin Rock Springs MTB which I use for most things, these retail at £1345, I have no idea what that is in Rand. I also have a second hand Dawes Hybrid that I bought for £80 that I am going to use mainly for the road work.
