Ah - have I committed a faux pas by expecting people to click on a
link which could be a sandal eating virus...

My sandals were supposedly based on African ones, they have a central
strap running down the top of the foot including down over the toes
and several side straps running across, two of which had buckles for
further adjustment. The usual triangular arrangement round the ankle
but with vertical straps running down from the one round the back of
the heel. Construction is entirely synthetic so totally amphibious
and very grippy but inclined to whiffiness after a long hot day in and
out of water.

If you're dead set on replacing your existing sandals with the same
model then, tbh, you'll be very lucky if only from the point of view
of models/designs changing over time.

If you've spotted what you want on a US website the just go ahead and
order it; the merkins don't bite ;-) The exchange rate is favourable
at the moment. If you're remotely concerned about import duty then
don't, its nothing to be unduly concerned about, the usual route is
for the postie to present you with a bill on delivery and you settle
it with him.

Actually these days they seem to send you a card, telling you they held
the package at the post office, until you ring them and agree you'll pay
the postie. You get hit for a £4 'service fee' on top of the duty, but
it can still be a good deal for things where you don't expect to have
any warranty claims.

should be. I've taken to keeping a supply under lock and key. Then
when they are used for "charges" the customer gets irate when I slip
the thing through the door because the old ones used to say "while you
were out..." They expect us to bring the item out first and only leave
a card if they aren't in. Mind you they used to get pretty irate when
lumbered with a hefty customs charge out of the blue.

We really need a different card for charges which are all held at the
office to the while you were out, but that is too obvious.

If ever the Royal Mail invite you to a [censored] up in a brewery take your
own beer and glass :-)

Yes, that would seem to me to be the obvious thing to do (and it's what
used to happen, no?). Leaving the package at the office and making the
customer phone up seems like a retrograde step.

think sandals for walking was quite a new concept still, and
manufacturers were playing around with designs. I've never seen
another pair quite like these, although some work on google has

anyone suggest a replacement? Or is there someone who could
mend/rebuild them? The real problem is that the vertical strap at the

them!

Seriously, these are wonderful shoes and surely ten years on they must
be even better! I have been halfway up Cader Idris in these sandals.
God gave me bendy ankles for a reason - I have never ever turned an
ankle in them.

10 years is very long life for a pair of sandals, so if your new
pair is half as good as the last one you'll be very fortunate
indeed. The most I've got out of a pair of Tevas is about 18
months; my current pair are probably going to be pentioned off
after just over a year (mind, I wear them just about all day
every day)

I actually saw something quite similar advertised in the current Op Pad
(Dutch outdoors mag) yesterday, and was going to tell you the good news.
Looks like no need... Those have a more enclosed toe and more
substantial looking straps, so would be heavier I think. The ad was for
Bever who have a (Dutch) website at http://www.bever.nl/

seem to exist anymore:

OK, I admit I'd been babying them for the last couple of years and not
wearing them into town. And they had been resoled. Anyway, I have
found a UK importer but he says the South African supplier is making
things awkward so it looks like I've been lucky he has them in my
size!

Which is a shame, especially since the Vegan Shoes (or whatever
it calls itself) home address is one I could easily visit. I
like to try shoes/sandals on for fit and comfort before buying.

Oh they're coming out of the woodwork in hordes now! Those do look
the job. I just don't like the common "fore and aft" straps
arrangement, the toes and arch look so vulnerable.

I've got my new Shakas. First impressions are that the webbing is
thinner than it used to be but the soles are higher tech and even
nicer than the old ones, with a ridge around the top edge which should
help stop stones going in. A short test drive nearly produced a
blister on the back of one heel but hopefully they will wear in. The
straps round the back have some sort of stiffening in, I think that's
the problem.
