When I started swim practice (on my own) I bought a swim mask and fins.
After a (short) while replaced the mask with regular goggles and
stopped using the fins. The mask vs goggles might be a presonal
preference thing but i find the goggles more comfortable, give better
visibility, don't leak as much, don't fog as much and provide better
streamline. The fact that they press onto your eye-balls is a minor
nuisance that one get's used to fairly quickly. The fins did make me
swim faster but did nothing for my technique or endurance. In a race
you can't wear them so it's better to train to become fast without
them. Swimming has a lot to do with technique and less with strength.
If you can find a good coach that will help a lot more. I attended a
Total Immersion training weekend which put me on the right path and I'm
still improving. I use a pull buoy regularly to train my upper body
technique and at the same time improve upper body strength.
