  1. Dear all:
I am a man 55 years old, physician, and I am doing the Atkins diet
from 22 days ago, without having lose neither gained weight.
My height is 165 cm (5,41 foot) and my weight is 80 kg (176,37 pound).
I don't suffer any illness, neither allergies to medications. I don't
smoke, and I occasionally drink a glass of red wine mixed with mineral
water. I have a sedentary life. In my last blood analysis done the
same day that I began the diet, I only had lightly raised the level of
    total cholesterol.
I have followed the diet according to the instructions given in Atkins
web page, and I have from the first week ketonic bodies in the urine,
but I do not lose weight.
I ask you for help on the conduct to follow. Should I insist a little
more yet, or the diet won't give results in me?
Thanks you in advance for any suggestion in order to know what to do.

  3. I recommend buying the book and reading the first 12 chapters.

Have you noticed any change in clothing fit?

Did you make physical size measurements before starting so you can tell
if you are converting fat tissues to more desnse muscle tissues located
    elsewhere on your body?

Atkins recommends a battery of blood and analytical tests. Did you take
    them? Are there any changes?

You might enjoy a book by Rob Thompson MD "The New Low Carb Way Of Life"
    ISBN 159070315.

He cautions that there are people with a fat metabolism condition who do
not respond well to the standard Atkins type of low carb diet.

What diets had you tried before, and what kind of responses did you have?

Eating too many calories or eating salty foods are two things that come to
    mind.
Without more information there's no way anyone can give you a more specific
answer. Post what you're eating and drinking *with amounts* and don't leave
anything out no matter how insignificant it seems to you.

  6. The key to Atkins is the phrase "eat enough to satisfy". If you eat
too much, you won't lose weight. The first two weeks are about
adaptation, calories don't matter then, but after that they DO matter
and you should be careful not to overeat. Count calories, post a list
of what you eat (weigh or measure everything), and don't be
    discouraged yet.

  7. Thanks to all for your answers.

Following the advice of Ada, I will give you the information of what I
have eaten during these 24 days that I am following the Atkins diet.

I have to say that due to my personal situation, I should eat
frequently cans of preserve and my diet is quite bored, but these
goods facilitate me the count of carbohydrates.

    Breakfast:
    - 1 can of tuna 80 g (188 Kcal - Proteins 18,4 g - Carbohydrates 0 g -
    Fat 12,8 g)
    - 60 g of fresh cheese (120 Kcal - Proteins 7,2 g - Carbohydrates 2,1
    g - Fat 9 g)

    Every days the same.

    Lunch:
    - 200 g of cow meat to the iron with olive oil (354 Kcal - Proteins
    39,4 g - Carbohydrates 0 g - Fat 19 g) or
    - 200 g of chicken to the iron with olive oil (290 Kcal - Proteins 42
    g - Carbohydrates 0 g - Fat 1,8 g) or
    - 200 g of fish to the iron olive oil.

    Dinner:
    - 1 can of tuna 80 g (188 Kcal - Proteins 18,4 g - Carbohydrates 0 g -
    Fat 12,8 g) more
    - 1 can from sardines 90 g (216 Kcal- Proteins 21,6 g- Carbohydrates
    1,14 g- Fat 12,6 g) more
    - two cups of green lettuce or escarole or
    - a cucumber

    decorated with mayonnaise+/- 40 g (270 Kcal - Proteins 0,25 g -
    Carbohydrates 0,45 g - Fat 30 g) or

    olive oil +/- 50 ml/ day (375 Kcal)

    Between hours and for dessert:
    - cheese emmental +/- 150 g (625 Kcal - Proteins 42 g - Carbohydrates
    4,5 g - Fat 46,5 g)

    - eggs 2 - 4 per week.

As you could see, not very varied.

    A greeting for all.

Total about 2400 kcals/day, about twice what I have to eat to lose
weight, but not abnormally high (depends on your weight and
metabolism, both of mine are low). Try limiting cheese to 100g total
per day, and add more salad greens (the book says two cups a day, but
you can get away with a lot more before the carbs add up) - some at
each meal. If that doesn't help, try limiting meat to 100g per meal.

Are you drinking lots of water, taking your vitamins, and exercising?
If not, you're not doing Atkins.

Plus, why is he eating 1.3 pounds of meat at one meal? Perhaps dividing
    this up would be good.

Um, it said "or" between each of the three alternatives.

Still, 200g is about half a pound (8 oz) which is a bit excessive
    anyway.

Half a pound of mayo is 1600 kcals. How did you make this, and how
many calories are really in it? I've found that things like mayo,
oil, and cheese add up faster than I realize.

Why not porterhouse for 1? You're not two people.

Spreading your calories throughout the day helps with appetite
    control, too.

Either use Fitday or http://www.delorie.com/health/ns/ to figure out
for yourself how many calories you're eating. Without measurements
(weights or volumes) we can't figure out calories for you.

Duh! I misread. I was thinking, over a pound of meat at one meal? Is
that possible? Eight ounces might not be too bad. I ate five hot dogs,
about 800 calories for lunch today. That had to be close to 8 ounces, if
not over. I'll probably eat close to 8 ounces of meat tonight (I'll weigh
it, if I remember) for dinner. It all depends on exercise and body
    composition.

Hi Doc, if you really are a physician then why do you not know these
    things?
Sedentary lifestyle, I assume, means no exercise. Are you retired or do
you just not have any patients? No exercise means no weight loss!
Evidently you didn't read Dr. Atkins book.
Being in Ketosis is the very best appetite suppressant, you may even
forget to eat, you're never hungry. So eating less is what happens...and
weight loss is inevitable. Why am I telling you this? If you had read
the book, you would know this. Likewise, if you are a real doctor you
    would know this.
If you are for real, then something is dreadfully wrong. Others in the
group are more knowledgeable and been here longer than I have. I'm sure
you can get help from them.
My advice is don't give up yet. I was stalled and wanted to quit, but
am glad I didn't 'cuz I have lost three more pounds just this past week.
The advice they kept giving me was, "Eat less and exercise more" and
    it worked!!!

Depends. IMHO 4oz/meal or so is ideal; you can always have more later
if you're still hungry, but you want to give yourself time to see if
that's "enough to satisfy your hunger" before eating more.

PP says a serving is a piece the size and thickness of the palm of
    your hand; that's about 4oz.

A serving for whom? Don't they give a more complex formula for determining how
many of those one should have per day and per meal?

I would assume it's for the person attached to the hand doing the
    measuring ;-)

    I don't know, I don't do PP - I just remember seeing a TV show where a
PP spokesperson described it that way, and it was so memorable that I
remembered it. I've heard 3-4oz bandied about in other places too, so
it seems like a good rule of thumb (rule of hand?) to follow for a
    per-meal basis.

Well, not if it's always 4 oz. :-)

You've heard it bandied about because it's the protein serving size recommended
by the low fat contingent, and by the moderate carb, low fat Zone diet. PP
would call for it on maintenance, perhaps, for a small, inactive person, I
    believe.

The whole PP concept is to calculate your lean body mass, activity level, and
then your protein requirement based on all those. Saying 4 oz. for everyone
    is not PP, IIRC.

Hmmm... maybe it was The Zone they were talking about. I remembered
the guideline, not the rest of the show ;-) It was "protein the size
and thickness of your palm, and fill the rest of the plate with
    vegetables."

ANYWAY my only point was that IMHO it's better to have more of
reasonable-sized meals than fewer of too-large meals, so you don't eat
too many calories before you realize you're not hungry any more.
