help buying dumbbells

I don't see why the other replier decided that a insult was in order.
I would call around to garage sales since this is something that some
people buy and don't use. You could try one of those dumbell sets that
has screw on collars and is adjustable by adding plates. This would be
cheaper than having a setup with a bunch of dumbells.

.... for $40US or less. The handles alone weigh 5 pounds, and using
only 10-, 5-, and 2.5-pound standard plates, there is usually enough
capacity to increase the load to about 80-85 pounds per dumbbell.
Standard plates can usually be purchased for about 40-50¢ per pound.

Most national sporting goods chains carry this equipment.

Costco, NY Barbell, Craigslist, ebay- ebay is good when someone is selling
something nice, like chrome Ivanko plate dumbbells. Regular dumbbells are so
cheap, especially in a set at Costco/Sam's, that it's usually not worth
buying them used on ebay. You can get a racked set up to 40 or 50 pounds for
pretty cheap money when Costco has them- then buy bigger ones singly. If you
have the room good DB racks like Cybex show up once in a while locally on
ebay.
