Hello everyone, I just recently (about 6 months ago) started to get really into MTBing. I have been using a cannondale that belongs to a friend, but, alas, he took it back. As I was searching online for a bike, it came to mind that I might ask a large forum group. I am a poor college student, so we are talking 400 bucks. Like I said, I want a MTB for hard trail riding and some downhill. Something aggressive and strong. I know most of you are laughing at me for thinking I can get a good bike so cheap, but please give me an idea. I hope someone can help me out. Thank you. Fritz.

A friend of mine just bought a Specialized Rock hopper..... early 1990's , steel frame , complete for $100 . So , be patient...... I'm sure someone has a deal for you 🙂

Well I have heard good things about the Specialized Hardrock which is about 330 dollars for the 04 model. Or the Trek 4500 is supposed to be good as well. I really need to make a decision on one soon though, because I'm moving in a month.

The MSRP on an '05 Hardrock Sport is $350 so you're not saving too much considering it's an older model.
If you can wait a few more months the new bikes will start showing up and bike shops will be discounting the '05 models that didn't sell. You can sometimes find a good deal that way if you're willing to spend the time investigating.
I can't tell you which of the 2 bikes you've listed above would best suit you. I like the appearance of the Hardrock frame but I don't know if it's as solid as it looks.

I am really leaning toward the 05 Hardrock Sport. But what is the difference between the Sport and the Sport Disc? The Disc is another 90 bucks, is it worth it to upgrade to that one?

I bought an 05 Hardrock Sport Disc today, silver flame.
The 06 I don't like the feel of it as much.
I guess I can make a decision myself 🙂
