  1. Saturday 20th August 2005

I was on my way to work. Trying to get there as quick as my legs would allow. Pushing the biggest gear I could as I had left home a little later than I would have liked. Unfortunately for me I had an accident. I was hit side-on by a car. The impact shattered the windscreen and knocked me out cold. I came round in the ambulance half in a state of shock, half in a state of bewilderment. Why am I here? When am i going to wake up? When the paramedics were speaking to me I had no reason to believe it was a Saturday morning. The last thing I could remember was walking to class in school at 11am on Friday. As far as i was concerned, I was asleep.
"You've been in an accident. You were hit by a car while you were on your bike."
    "No. No, i'm asleep"
As much as I wanted to pretend, this wasn't going to end in an instant. I was taken to hospital and straight into the Resus department. My head was secured and my neck was in a brace. I could move my arms and legs but they were in a stinging trance of pain. My head was aching, I had never experienced a sore head anywhere near it.
Gradually it came back to me. I could remember Friday evening, waking up on Saturday, leaving the house in a rush, seeing the car. It still hadn't hit home though.
After being taken for a neck X-Ray, I was allowed free of the neck brace and head support. Finally I could wriggle my extremely uncomfortable legs and look at some of my injuries. The knuckles on my right hand were skinned completely. They still have chunks missing from them. My right knee was bloodied and swollen, it was so painful to move. My left shin was badly grazed. I was informed that my left shoulder was skinned. I could feel the tender tissue against the hospital sheets. I was also told I had a laceration on my neck, which would have to be sutured.
My father and girlfriend were waiting outside. Eventually my father was allowed in and we both began crying. I could have had much more serious injuries, paralyzation, death. I was so lucky, extremely bloody lucky.
After going for a head X-Ray, it was found I had fractured my skull. Another lucky thing was, I had avoided any bruising or bleeding on my brain.
Later that evening my girlfriend was allowed to see me and along with my parents we all agreed one thing.

    SHOULD HAVE WORN A HELMET

I have a helmet but I never wear it. I never saw the need. Never enjoyed it. Basically I was arrogant enough to say: "nothing will ever happen. I'm a competent cyclist"
Now I will never allow myself to leave the house without one. I'm hoping i'll be fit enough to get back out on the bike next weekend, with a helmet.

Now I don't want to sound like your mother, or even worse your mother-in-law, but next time you go out on your bike whether its to work, on a century ride or just round the corner, think about your head. You may say: "oh i've never crashed" but that doesn't mean you won't. I'm extremely lucky in that i'll be able to get back to normal but not everyone is as lucky as me. People will continue to die in accidents because they do not wear a helmet and it would cheer me up a load if some of you guys started wearing helmets. Remember we are one big family, and lets hope the family only gets bigger.

  2. Spread the love. 🙂
    Wear a helmet. 😄

I absolutely agree with this post. I went through a car windscreen wearing a helmet. Some damage to the car and to my arm. Nothing else. Phew.😄

Good luck with your recovery El Loto.

  3. I have fallen once trying to avoid hitting my friend who slowed down. I went down. I am glad I had a helmet on and I was only doing about 20kph at the time. I scares me most when i see messengers without helmets darting in and out of traffic and over curbs etc...

  4. here is my confession...

about a year and a half ago i was on a saturday morning group ride, a 19 year old girl hit four of us. Speed limit was 50 mph and who knows how fast she was actually going. I was the first person in the draft and two other people behind me. She nicked the guy in the back, but she kept coming over on the right side of the road. I caught the right corner of the bumper. All I remember was a big jolt and blacking out. I wake up about 10 seconds later after i got hit. I immeaditly get back up and check the people out that are around me. At this time the adreaniline is going crazy and i was the only one standing up. The guy in front of me caught the worst of it and got hit by the front bumper straight on and the windshield/windscreen. I can still picture no skin on his arm. After I've done all that i can and after cursing out the girl who never even saw us i took a look at myself...

my whole left side of my body was road rash. my jersey and my riding tights were holding on by a couple of threads. check out the helmet (or wat was left of it) and it was just about shattered. i can truly say that my helmet saved me from turning into a vegetable or even death. EMT's were on their way. Adreanline was running low and my legs could hardly hold me up anymore and I just about collapsed. had to lay down. people were all around us doing what they could.

Cops stopped traffic as were getting ready for our $400 ambulance ride. The guy in front of me had to go to the trauma center and we all ended up making a full physical recovery. Went in for x-rays and they came out ok, but my knees (ecspecially the left one) will never be the same. Road rash all on the left side of my body. Neck felt like sh!t for a while. I am truly mentally scared from this incident.

As for the chick that hit us... she claims she never saw us because the sun was in her eyes at 10:30 in the morning (she was full of sh!t). she was putting on some make-up or on the phone. I only went after here insurance company for the new bike (Felt F55). I didn't need any more $$$ cause im a young one (18 years old) and i have my whole life ahead of me, i was 16 when i got hit. however the rest of the guys had families and jobs, and they went to work on her insurance company.

    Please wear a helmet

  5. I am wearing a helmet more and more, specially after reading so many accidents.

As the smarty pants I am I became reluctant to wear a helmet because "Its just a bike ride".

The thing is that 18 miles an hour is 28 kilometers and hour. That is a lot more kilometers an hour I ever seen on my other bike rides. And then is traffic, and then is bad falls.

I want a stronger helmet ... riveted to my little empty skull

  6. Yup. I have to agree, although, stupidly I sometimes go without a lid. During my early road racing days, me and a good friend were out trainig on a 50mile ride. We were coming home along a main road and had to through a nasty roundabout. About three quarters through it, some arsewipe pulled out in front of us and there was no way our puny road-bike brakes would stop us in time, so we both swerved to avoid him. I just clipped the rear of the car, but my mate caught the full brunt of it. I was wearing, my mate wasn't. Two weeks later, 15 of us from the bike club attended his funeral. That day will never leave my memory.

  7. About 2 years ago I was out on a normal training ride. I was attempting to make a right hand turn onto another road. The problem was, there was a lot of sand and gravel right around the corner, out of view. So as I am making this turn, I hit the sand and immediately go down. I slid into the middle of the road, but thankfully no cars were coming at that point. All I could think of was to get out of the road as fast as possible. I grab my bike and get up on the grass. Then I look myself over. I had road rash all down my side, my elbow taking the worst of it. I bent my derailleur and tore up my right shoe. I take my helmet off to take a minute and catch my breath. The right side of my helmet was all scratched up and cracked. Things would have been much worse had I not been wearing it.

At the LBS, they have a wall of helmets that are destroyed due to crashes. They are cracked, shattered, scraped, etc. The people wearing them all survived with minimal injuries. Due to the condition of the helmet, they probably would not have survived if they didn't have it on.

Why anyone makes the claim helmets don't save lives is beyond me.

    -Matt

  8. theres more chance of you being hit a car when you walk to the shops..

however i dont see any of you suggesting we wear a helmets when we do that.

you are all tools of helmet manufacturers.

I personally like to walk on the footpath, or sidewalk, depending on where you're from, rather than the road. I sure as hell can't walk at 20-30mph. And when I walk, I often find I can stop faster. Because I walk slower than I ride, I have more time to look around and avoid accidents. I might be a tool, but this tool has a protective casing.

Wow, another statistic pulled out of someone's [censored]....

The helmet debate will never be won by either side of the argument, but I can tell you this for sure - since you never plan an accident, it's almost impossible to plan how you will land. Thus, it is practically impossible to actively stop your head from hitting something in the event of an accident. Fate will take its course, and your head will either hit something or it won't.

I chose to wear a helmet before it was compulsory in this country, and I'd still wear one if it wasn't. I don't care if I look like a dork. You can make your own choice 🙂

Rather than just tools then, eh? 😄

  12. I have been wearing a helmet since the year dot when I saw a guy who'd just been knocked off his bike in Liverpool. He'd been going round a roundabout on his bike, a car had done the usual and the guy's head was all smashed up. Blood everywhere!!

My first helmet was a rather fetching day-glow yellow polystyrene one!! 🙂

  13. Its not just about saving lives, save the concussions and further injury as well, I had a severe concussion and sealed my left eye shut biking w/o a helmet as a kid, prob would have walked away and been fine with a helmet. I only wore the helmet as an adult because riding on a military base its mandatory but these stories and my own experience hit home as a reminder to keep it on regardless.

tool or not, i hate u

  15. I wear a helmet on the road; I do not usually when I ride my MTB... I go faster on the road, and although there are trees off road, they don't cut you off...

    If you're trolling, you're a knob.

If you're serious, you're an even bigger knob.

    Walrus - well put.

I do not understand the aversion to wearing a helmet - is it a childish macho thing, or some perverse "basic human right" nonsense? Quality well designed helmets provide great ventilation, weigh little and if they fit correctly are comfortable. I have a new Limar 909 and I can honestly say I don't even notice I have it on - proven a month ago when I rode to work and didn't know I had left it at home until someone in the training group asked me where my helmet was. A mate has Giro that suits his head, and he says the same thing.

wear a helmet - it may save your life.

  18. I can't believe it!

A guy at work who cycles walked in this a.m. with a beany hat on! So I said to him, "Where's your helmet?" to which he replied "That you were more likely to get knocked off your bike if you were wearing a helmet!" 😕

Where's the logic in that I wonder ... do people in cars aim more specifically at you when you've your lid on? 🙄

Probably. All car drivers are evil.

Is that guy in the picture the guy that cycles to your work with a beanie hat on? If so, perhaps we could post his pic to a Scottish driving forum and ask them to aim for him instead. 😄

No, it isn't. If HE worked here, I could forgive him ANYTHING. Yum, yum ... :p
