  1. My current helmet is purple, does anyone have any ideas on methods I
can use to change its colour without affecting its functionality? I'm
worried that the petro-chemicals in spray paint may affect the
structure of my helmet thus reducing my protection. The last thing I
would want is a helmet that cracked under pressure.

    Try these.

Unlike a motorbike helmet, the shell of a cycle helmet is not
structural. It is there, I think, to stop the polystyrene 'grabbing'
on the road surface if you are sliding.

I would recommend giving your purple helmet a regular polish. (sorry.)

So's mine but don't worry, according to the unsolicited e-adverts I receive
I think that's normal. OTOH the size........................

Since it has little use or functionality why not just paint it?

Firstly, I am innocently assuming we are talking about cycling helmets here.

If so, since they are as much use as a chocolate fireguard you may as well
    paint it.

Personally I think you would get more use out of it if you planted it up
with geraniums and lobelia and hang it in the garden.

If you are anticipating it will save your life -- well tough.

That's a bit harsh. They protect very well against the scrapes, knocks,
bruises, road rash etc etc, and lessen the chances/seriousness of
concussion AND can make you more visible too.

If its more than three years old I'd consider getting a new one - the foam
degrades over time and eventually rather than compressing when struck will
just split, absorbing very little of the impact.

However if it is three years old and you haven't needed it I'd kind of be
thinking that maybe it's not worth the inconvenience. Mind, if you get rid
of it and go bareheaded Sod's Law says that you _will_ take a tumble. It
is the helmet manufacturers manipulation of Fate and Chance that I really
    object to.

    You're probably right.

possibly. If you are particularly susceptible to low speed pratfalls.

highly unlikely - see discussions passim regarding rotational brain
    stirring v. impact damage

AND can make you more visible too.

only if it's a very 'angry' shade of purple.

Can we just carry on with the childish 'purple helmet' jokes please.
Anything else is just too tedious.

So concussion can only happen with a rotational brain injury then?

Note that 'highly unlikely' does not mean the same as 'never', or
    'impossible'.

So is concussion very rarely present in non-brain-rotational impact
    thingies?

    (anecdotal) Not IME.

The issue is that rotational impact is liable to increase severity of
concussion and increase the volume of the brain affected by the
    trauma.

But IANANeurobiologist (well, I've been to a lecture or two on it, but
nothing relevent, and not about trauma injuries, anyway)

Like I said, see previous discussions. Google is your friend.
