Hi, I fell last weekend and hit with my head kind of hard. When I check the helmet this morning, it was sort of cracked on the side where I hit. The rule is that if the helmet gets cracked it becomes totally useless. However, it seems to me that it will still offer some protection. What do you all think?
Also, I remember that bell had a replacement policy on their helmets. Many years ago I had a serious accident with a car, and cracked a bell helment in half. They sent me a free replacement helmet with a certificate that said "Saved by the Bell". The helmet that I just cracked is a Limar. Do they have a free replacement policy that you all know about?
Note that I am not trying to start a helment war (even thought hey are fun). For me personally, a helmet saved me from more serious injury a couple of times. However, I don't try to force people to wear helmets if they don't want to. I am trying to get info on my particular situation.

When I sold Limar, they did not-One reason I stopped selling them.

I cracked 2 helmets last year, after not having had a wreck for 20 years. Each time I bought a new helmet. They don't cost much, ESPECIALLY when compared to the cost of medical care. :-)
I'm 65 , car-free and hope to still be riding when I'm 100.

it might, it might not... Helmets are designed to absorb energy from a collision once by deforming or cracking. So your helmet now still looks a lot like a helmet, but it probably won't act like one when it has to.

Get a new helmet and in the mean time don't wear the cracked one. If you don't feel safe or comfortable without a helmet, get a new one asap ;-)

No, no, no! If there's a crack, all the magic leaks out!
It now offers ZERO protection. If it's a bad leak, the helmet might have a magic vacuum effect; the protection could even be negative!
Whatever you do, don't THINK about riding a bike until you get a new helmet, completely full of factory-sealed magic.

I don`t wear one when on my pedal bike but when I am taking my food through a straw I may change whats left of my mind. Have wrecked two motorcycle "lids" and can only say that the impacts would have smashed my skull on both occasions. The accident investigators for both incidents agreed.
Motorbike helmets are pretty different form bicycle helmets though. Seriously, what do you think would have happened with a bicycle helmet instead of a motorcycle helmet on?

Please do enlighten me Jasper as to the credentials of accident investigators of the world. The second of the accidents I mentioned involved an impact of upper body to a kerb which left me with damaged C1,C2,C4. Damage to upper left side of helmet was a crack 10cm long with collapsed sides to crack. Doctors at Lodge Moor hospital impressed by the lack of cranial damage, in short I am fortunate to be alive. As to the value of cycle helmets I have no idea, as I mentioned I have never worn one in 35 years of cycling. I merely advise the OP that if he wishes to use a crash-hat he should use one that is undamaged. I am certain the arguments about the usefulness of cycle helmets will rage for some time to come. In the world of motorcycles the argument was settled a long time ago.
