  1. to introduce myself. Again.

My name is Ken Fortenberry, I love to run and have loved
running ever since I was a kid. I ran the mile and two
mile in high school where my claim to fame is being
lapped only once in the two mile by Craig Virgin when he
was a senior at Lebanon and I was sophomore at Cahokia. ;-)

I was once a regular reader and poster to this newsgroup
back when I was training for the 1999 Chicago Marathon, my
first and only marathon. As a 42 year old I finished in
4:15 and believe me, it could have been much worse, Oprah
worse !!, if not for the good advice I received here.

I am, as of today, in training for the 2008 Chicago Marathon.
I look forward to participating here again and sharing
what little I can about a fat 49 year old trying to get fit
    enough to run again.

  2. Good luck to you!

I'm training for the Chicago Marathon as well - my first marathon.
(I'll soon be 33.) I've been running for just over a year and my
longest run is 10 miles. I'll be following the ever-popular Hal Higdon
training schedule. With consistent training and dedication, I think
    we'll both be fine!

    As you've described here: http://tinyurl.com/ojjvp
This may be a little, but contrats! I ran Chicago in 96, 97, and 98. A
    great race.

    A 126-week training plan. I like it!

Looking forward to it. Welcome back.

    That's not a typo. I weigh in at a whopping 230 lbs. It'll
take me at least a year to get down to a reasonable 195 or
so. I never gave up running, even as a clydesdale I love it
too much to give it up, but 3 miles is my standard 4 or 5
times a week distance and I don't know if I can run much
beyond 6 miles anymore. I ran 3 miles this morning, I'm
gonna rest tomorrow and then see how far I can go slow on
    Sunday.

Wow. That's very similar to my running history. I stopped running in
2000. Gained weight until I weighed 245 lbs (60 lb increase). Started
losing again in 2003 (mostly walking). Started running again in August
2003. Got down to 165 lbs (80lb loss). Qualified for Boston in October
2004. Ran Boston in 2005. Ran some 50K trail races and a 50-miler this
year. Like you, I'm also 49.

That's the difference. At least you kept running. As you lose weight,
    you'll be doing great.

Getting back in to the run is always a challenge. Though
from your later post, you never really left. Abetted by
a torn rotator cuff last year, I fell off the wagon entirely
for several months, and mostly for the rest of the year.
    Getting back now.

Good gawd, Ken. You stalking me? Every group I lurk in turns out to harbor
    yourownself.

    (I am of course kidding)

I've been lurking here since I quit smoking last August and started running
again. I'm down 35 pounds, and have a goal of finishing the marathon up here
in Daleyville this fall. Currently up to about 30 miles a week, and so far,
    feeling good.

Hope it goes well for you.
