  1. I must say, Yes I am hooked on this program, My question is is he really
that way in real life, or is it just a bit hyped up for TV I know
plenty of restaurants that take many short cuts, and they are doing very
well I find that Mr Ramsey has a quality that even when he goes off on
some one it seems rather enjoyable Being Scottish, has he ever made
    Haggis??

No idea what Ramsay is like in real life. I didn't watch the show
religiously but in the episodes I did catch he seemed to mellow a great deal
as the competition was weaned of the incompetents. He probably knows how to
make Haggis but the type of restaurants he's worked in (and now owns) it's
doubtful it's on the menu 🙂

There are a couple of other shows with Ramsay that run on BBC America
here. One is Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares, where he goes around to
restaurants that are failing to try and help. What you see there is
similar to Hell's Kitchen, in that he has some strong words for the
kitchen staff. He doesn't yell quite as much, but he's plenty profane.

Watched part of a few shows and wondered why no one punched the jerk.
Then after talking to a real chef I watched the final show in total.
Now I understood why the yelling. But the show did seem heavily
    scripted.
Such as the ending. How many would turn down a restaurant to take a
job for a screaming pansy? I think the whole thing was phony.

He still gets the restaurant. It opens next year in Las Vegas.

He has a reputation in professional circles for being a jackass. I'm
afraid I'd spend some jail time if he (or anyone) spoke or shouted like
that to me. If we're striving to be professionals, then do so. If we're
playing ego games, well then make sure there's plenty of antiseptic and
    bandages around.

We wouldn't get on very well. Terror in a kitchen merely serves to
tamper with the smoothness of the operation. And smoothness is critical
for shipping a lot of food quickly. People need to be trained, not
reprimanded. Teach them properly the first time and see if they can do
it. If they can, smile. If not, part company and find someone who can.

Axiom: you gotta kiss a lotta toads before you find a prince.

It's a *television show*. This isn't Ozzie and Harriet! While I have never
watched other shows like 'Survivor' or 'Fear Factor', at least there was a
recognizable goal to this one. Not a cash prize, and not the people who
were participants "voting people off". Came down to a man who, while he may
not have the best personality does have quite a bit of experience as a chef.
Much more than any of the contestants had.

Actually, I think the winner of the competition was completely correct in
accepting the praise from Chef Ramsay and accepting the offer to work along
side him to become more of an accomplished chef before he ventures out on
his own. The guy is young. He was good but not (IMO) good enough to run a
first class restaurant right out of the starting gate. He'll get his own
restaurant, and with a little more training. And Ramsay isn't going to be
shouting at him; Michael isn't going to be back on the line. "Side by side"
    is the key phrase here.

He can however cook up a storm and run a very tight kitchen.

Coupled with his personality, that's why -HE- is there and a
few hundred thousand other chefs aren't.

    Quoted message said:

Same as Bob said, though - I'd punch his lights out soon as look
at him if he behaved that way toward me.

That's why you would be thrown off the TV show and likely sued
by the producers for wrecking the season, not to mention having
a serious talk with LAPD about assault and battery.

    No amount of skill,

I get it alright. The guy is an [censored], the TV people know that sells, so
they have him being an [censored] on the TV. He's not being an [censored]
*because* of the TV show, though - make no mistake - he's that way out
    regardless.

There are probably only a handfull of baseline teaching "styles",
and Ramsey's style is to embarass/shame you until you get it
right. There are a few professional sports coaches and probably
a few hundred armed forces Drill Instructors who do it that way
    every day.

You can argue all day (I'll pass, thanks!) on whether that style
of teaching is socially acceptable to you or anybody else, it
    doesn't really matter.

What matters is that somebody took that style and ran with it to
produce a TV show. None of the contestants were there at
gunpoint, and I would say it's better than even money they were
briefed on his style before they signed final contracts. They
were going for a big jackpot, Ramsey's ways were part of the ride.

    That's -it-.

The name of the show IS "Hell's Kitchen", not "Feel Good Affirmation
Kitchen". The latter wouldn't be much of a show.

Ramsay might seem to be a jerk, but he's not only a reknowned chef but
also a highly successful restauranteur. He has something like nine
restaurants, including a Michelin 2-star, and is consistently able to
attract, train and keep talented employees.

Watched part of a few shows and wondered why no one punched the
jerk. Then after talking to a real chef I watched the final show in
total. Now I understood why the yelling. But the show did seem
    heavily scripted.

I'm not sure how to break this to you, but "...Ozzie and Harriet" was
also television show. The RL Nelsons didn't live the way the "The
Nelsons" on TV did, and the RL Nelsons were not like their TV
    alteregos.

Poorly stated. I meant I don't think Hell's Kitchen was (as) heavily
scripted as Ozzie & Harriet. I'm sure parts of Hell's Kitchen was scripted,
but not the parts with the the kitchen incompetents freaking out under
pressure. And Gordon Ramsay didn't act like "Ozzie" (maybe Ozzie Ozborne)
because real life just ain't that way.
