Thanks FD, didn't realise you'd put it up on the website
Thankya. If its only 1.2km then I should be right...hopefully
Ok so the current a.b start list reads as
Jono
Ess
Lama??
??
I raced well off second sratch yesterday (6 mins) at Newham, we did 90k at 40 ave exact and i averaged 84% HR, soo much pain!! The winner came from our bunch of twenty, and i snuckin at 6th (or 7th maybe) in the sprint after a failed attack on the last hill which left me completely rooted. All good prep for hell of the west!!

What were the other Haw guys off? Just wondering what time I would have been given if I had entered

Diesel Dave was off 23 mins (C2)
Tim Watson was off 15 mins(B2)
aaron was off 12 mins.(B1)
Me 6 mins (A2)
When i rocked up they had me with the 12 minute group but i wanted a suffer fest so i opted to jump up a group. However, we caught the 12 min group and about 5 of them jumped on to the back of us, so theoretically i wasted 50 k's of the race in a group i didn't need to be in! I'm not sure if there was C1 group in between 23 mins and 15 mins but that's what i reckon you'd fit in.
I reckon they'd put you around 20 minutes.. its hard ot handicap properly, but just wait till the faster groups come then jump on..

I'd love to have a crack - and get left behind mercilessly...

It's averaging about as steep as Baw Baw, but is only 1.2km long, and
maxes at 15%, Baw Baw's steepest pinch (Winch Corner) is 20%.
You could get up in in a 25, but you'll be grinding. Take a 27 ....

I take it this is not the Hell of the West Triathlon at Goodawindi ?? Is there a link to the one you guys are talking about ?

Ok I choose to grind, mainly because I don't have a 27, of course I could go and get one, but heck good strength training 😉

I was thinking the same thing Mikey. Couldn't understand why all these
cyclists were headed off to a triathlon.

I know I thought I was in the twilight zone..... 🙂
When is it....? Do I need to join anything ? And would I be able to help in one of you guys winning, like acting as a wind break or something ? 🙂

It's a shame to get that close to the finish, and get spat out the back
because you have the wrong gearing. It's your call, but a 27 is a good
investment for this hill.

bwahahahah
yellow jersey wearers get scratch 😄
Handicaping was how can I say.....bemusing...but anyway, started off 8mins. The group I was in got caught by the 6min group (containing GPL and Jono) after 26 min. My rubber band eventually snapped at 56min, tried to latch on to the scratchies coming through, but to no avail. Spent the rest of the ride having a chat to a couple of other riders.
Tough day at the office!
Haven't got any stats as forgot to put my polar on, and my bike computer was playing up.
Yes Bleve it would have been nice to have a 27, but it really didn't matter anyway.

Yeppa - it was... a number of riders in the 6min bunch need to brush up on their bunch/wind skills... tinyurl.comzfk5xOpen ↗ I'm no expert and I'm only 1/2 way through this book, but the few tips I've picked up so far have been invaluable.
As soon as we headed south, 'Atomic' Aaron jumped out and started an echelon for the side wind.. only to be yelled at by someone for disrupting the bunch.. er.. they kind of got the message and started rolling turns. I was yelled at a few times for pushing too hard, then for not going hard enough.. cant suit everyone I guess..
Great HCC turn out.. and the final hill wasn't anything to write home about, yeah it hurt, but so does racing... seated in 39/27 I was pulling a few wheelies when seated.. yeeeeeharrr 🙂
There were some walkers.. this wasn't even cyclocross... I'd recommend Yarra St intervals for anyone who needs to walk up a 16%er...
Polar tells me: avge 38.8km/h... 67kms.. 1hr 43mins...
No idea of placings, we'll see if they publish the full list.. I came third in my bunch, only pushing 90-95% on the last hill.. it would have been 100%+ if someone looked like passing me 🙂
cheers,
GPL

NC: Hell of the West – May '06
My first open road handicap. I was in good company with Aaron and Jono joining me off 6mins. There were a few others joining us making a smallish group of 7 or so. All working OKish until the turn south and side wind. Aaron very quickly popped out to the middle of the road to start the echelon going – when someone from the bunch piped up about him breaking the rhythm or some [censored]. 'Mr wtf is an echelon' quickly got the message (and a lesson in bunch riding) when a few others started rolling turns into the side wind.
Everyone was doing their bit while we chased down the 8min(?) and 12min(?) bunches ahead. As the bunch grew, a few popped off the back and a few just sat on the back. Aaron threw in a few harder efforts on the front to keep everyone on their toes. I was on the back of our bunch as the scratch train blasted through, I watched in awe as they flew past at great speed. Before I could respond it was too late to accelerate and jump on. Aaron, Jono, and a few others had latched on while I was left working with some guys who were hurting and kept yelling at me to ease up.. meh, maybe at the start of the race I'd help them, but not now.. I had some ITTing to do!
I kept cranking and picked up some A graders who had popped off the back just up the road. Not long after that we caught Aaron and a few kms later a lone Jono was welcomed into our little group. I can't remember where we picked up Stewart, but he was also with us now. The closer we got to 'the climb' the less people were willing to roll turns. Jono, Aaron, Stewart, Spoke(n) Russ, Phil Indvino, and myself were left to set the pace to the bottom of the climb.
I had scoped out only two parts of the climb that would hurt, but after a quick 65kms the whole damn thing hurt. Spoke(n) Russ and Jono were off the front and weren't slowing. I settled in and had Phil pace me up about 1/2 way before I gave a little kick. Phil queried my choice of gearing, "39/27" was the reply… what was he doing thinking about _my_ gears? No idea of the final results… it didn't rain and nobody passed me on the climb, it was a good day! 🙂
