I am looking for help/ advice with regards to a problem I am having with a helicomatic freewheel.
The bicycle is a Raleigh record sprint and I am as they say very much taken with this bike, it appears though that the freewheel is starting to slip.
I have not disassembled the freewheel but I have soaked it in white sprit, allowed it to dry and re-oiled it but this does not appear to have cured the problem.
Another option may be to strip down the freewheel but I am a little dubious about the overall success and practicality of this, so the question is should I give this up as a lost cause and replace the freewheel and if so with what and how? or are there other options.

I recently upgraded my Record Sprint to modern 9-speed spec, cold setting the rear end out to 130mm. It went OK; there were no problems. But having done that - and having ridden the bike for fifteen years now - I'm getting increasingly fed up with it. It's outrageously heavy, and at the same time, mine, which is a 25 1/2", is ridiculously flexible. When honking up a hill the rear brake rubs on every pedal stroke.
A new frame is going to become part of the plot sooner rather than later.

Are you sure it's not the chain slipping over the sprocket teeth?

I doubt you'll get anything to fit it these days - Helicomatic wasn't common even before it became obsolete 20 years ago. Get a new rear wheel, or rebuild the existing wheel with a new hub.

Helicomatic freewheels show up from time to time in Ebay. With a little patience you might find a replacement. Check your local dealers also.

Replacing the hub or wheel. Finding a NOS 126mm hub is easy.

what sort of weight is it then? 30ish?
28lbs or 12.7Kg
ah yes that is bit high for a road bike, lighter than my old bike but then it's a old steel lump.
