Heavy duty wheelsets

Those two rims are Mavic's full blown DH rims, not that there's anything wrong with that; I have the
D 321's (EX 823) on my DH rig.

The EX 721 (D 521) is a great rim too. I've had these on my XC rig for a couple years now. IMHO,
they are a very worthy rim.

Everything will depend of on the quality of the wheel builder though.

Crossmax, Deemax... anything maxed out is bad news. They're expensive, proprietary, and
require special tools. Other than low spoke counts and bladed spokes, there isn't any real
reason to buy them.

Go with a 36-spoke wheel, 3cross, and some say double-butted spokes are better/less stiff and more
compliant.

100% go with the Hope hubs (both XC and BULB hubs are very tough)on a handbuilt wheel. I used to run
a 321 disc rim on my XC bike and it was indeed bombproof, but two of them will be adding almost a
pound to your wheels,over something like an X3.1. Occasional 2-3 foot drops don't really justify a
downhill rim in my opinion.

Gave my back wheel a real sideways _slam_ a few times and not gone more than a couple mm's out of
true, even though I wrote of a rear mech and a few spokes got bent. D521's seconded.

For a quarter of the price you could get Sun Doubletrack rims on just about any hub. And you
wouldn't have to buy Mavic Gucci parts to rebuld the hubs.

OK, how about this just to complicate it: I want to go UST. Now that I've got a little stan's in the
tyres I'm very happy with UST. I've done some research but am probably going towards the Deemax
despite all advice to the contrary. Rationalisation follows:

I've grabbed some quick prices: Buying the bits through something like Cambriabike will cost roughly
NZD$620 incl postage(USD$460) (assuming I sneak through customs with then and don't have to pay
GST). I still have to pay to get them built up. So, that's what? $100 a wheel? NZD$820total? Last
time I bought something mail order from Cambriabike it took 8 weeks to get to me and came in two
parcels three weeks apart. Admittedly that's still a pretty good price.

The LBS has quoted something like $NZD $1000 (USD$680) or a bit over to do the 823/Hope entirely
themselves. Or I can get the Deemax with a end of 'season' clearance price of NZD$1100 (USD $750)

One of my big concerns is weight too. The Deemax front wheel weighs 1075g. Using the spec sheets the
EX823 on Hope Hubs with DTSWiss spokes builds up to be about 1100g.

You can see that I'm leaning towards the Deemax for convenience; and despite being a full-on d/h
wheel the weight is good comparatively speaking. The LBS guy has certainly talked them up. I don't
know that I want to wait the 8 weeks plus build time for the do it myself 823/Hope wheels. I'm not a
good wheelbuilder so I'd have to get the LBS to do it. Despite having a good relationship with the
LBS I think that they'd feel ripped off if I turned up with a wheelset parts and asked them to build
them up when they quoted me on it weeks before.

So I'm faced with a price difference of around $100NZD (USD$70) between the Deemax that I can get
tomorrow and the 823/Hope wheels that I have to wait months for. Thoughts anyone?

I rode with Mavic x3.1 for a year with absolutely no probs never trued them
once (I am 240lbs) my buddy has been riding a set for 6 months and he has
had no problems(6'7" 250lbs) on my bullit I put on the D3.1 and love them
bit heavier but sturdy.

No, nothing like Cambria or Performance Bike. Too small a country. The trouble with this is that I
don't consider myself a master wheel builer - which makes the difference to the price in this case.
Quite a few people do buy on the 'net for other stuff. A couple of the larger stores here have some
sort of web presence but the products selection in areas like spokes, rims and hubs aren't there.

I am 200# and was having trouble with the Rolf rear wheel on my hardtail rig. The LBS built me a Sun
Mammoth rim on an XT hub, straight guage heavy duty spokes, 4X. It is awesome. I've got a couple
hundred trail miles including some fast rutted fire road descents on it and have had NO trouble with
it. It hasn't even needed a post-build tuneup yet. Yes, it's heavier but a few grams won't kill me
and I love not having to worry about a f**ked up wheel miles from the house or car. Total cost with
custom buildup was about $140. It is bulletproof. Read the reviews on mtbr.
