  1. Hi group, I want to ask about Heart Rate.
I am 43 years old, and feel pretty fit, but not a Lance Armstrong.
My HR at many times goes well near 95% of my maximum, but I don't feel like
    am pushing myself that hard.
I am 43, so my maximum HR should be 177, Age - 220.

    Any advice ?

The 220 - age formula is very much an estimate. Depending on your
exercise history, genetics and a whole other host of factors it could be
    way off.

The only sure way to find your HR max is to exert yourself till you
literally feel like you're going to puke. At forty three you'd probably
be wise to do this under strictly controlled conditions.

I am 58 years old and not in the best of health and I set my maximum heart rate this way:\
I went untill I was as stuffed as I was prepared to get, own built in safety limit. I then set the heart rate monitor alarm to go off 5 beats a minute below this. I did this so that when the alarm goes off, it gives me time to react and take the appropriate measures, (Usually clip out and fall off "Gracefully"😉
I personally have left this setting the same for the last three years and can measure the improvement in performance as the original gives me the "Base" measurement. I can now go with the alarm going for just under a minute on a hard climb without going over the "old" limit of exersion.
    Hope this helps.

    Hi,

I am a couple of years older, my max is ~175 I climb at 93-4% on climbs of
20 minutes duration. So these are similar figures, however, I would rate a
climb at this pace as hard and I would not want to put too many climbs like
    this back to back.

I'm a year younger and reasonably fit but average only about 70 - 120km / week, mostly recreational with a littel club racing thrown in.

My max HR seems to be about 193. At my "theoretical maximum" of 220-42 = 178 I know I'm working but can certainly go harder. I get to 95% of 178 going medium hard up just about any hill. So in my case (and plenty of other people) the formula for Max HR is pretty meaningless. As someone else said the only way to find your true max is to go as hard as you can (for about 60s).

Just for reference, the highest average HR I can sustain for different lengths of effort (climbing) are:

    ~10 mins : 186 (= 96% max HR)
    ~20 mins : 182 (= 94%)
    ~60 mins : 175 (= 91%)

(and after any of those efforts I'm toast for the rest of the ride)

These seem like very high figures to me and really fit riders seem to be able to go hard at much lower HRs than I can.

I strapped my Polar on my old man for the last two City2Surfs
    - he's 64 and has a MaxHR of 190.
If you are feeling curious you should also try to find your resting HR.
Go to sleep wearing your HRM (with it recording data of course). Some models
will record the lower limit, otherwise work off the AvgHR as a guestimate.

    - Mark
