So how normal is this?
I'm 51 (have ridden for many years)
Resting 42-44 (Doctor recorded 42 at a physical last year) 🙂
I can hold 185-187 up hills, occassionally push into 190's but can't hold it.
The "formula" says max is 220-age=169. But I can hold in the 172-176 range for hours. I don't think I am some sort of superman. Guess it is as they say, each person is different.😕
Apparrently that's normal for you and your heart. Just go with it. The theoretical formula is only a rule of thumb. -

ha! same here...in the hospital this summer they got a 43 and asked me if that was normal...I said "For me it is".
Loved your post. Reminded me of my late father who (then into his 80s) after surgery was in the recovery room. I saw a nurse approach with a needle and when I asked why, she said his heart rate (48 bpm) was slow. I told her, not for him it isn't. 🙂When I crashed last fall, the ambulance attendant, after listening to my chest said to me "strong heartbeat, you must be a runner" to which the other attendant said to him -- "you idiot, it was a bicycle crash, he is a bicyclist, not a runner." 😄
