Headset wear...

It sounds like you now have index steering:-)

You can either replace your headset, or you can rotate the headset bearing cups(top & bottom) 90 degrees. You would then have to turn your handlebars a full 90 degrees before you encountered the notch. You will have other things to worry about if this happens, though!

Well, pulled the headset apart today to see what the damage was- pretty bad pitting in the bottom cup. Looks like I'm up for a new headset... now which one to get? Bear in mind this is a low end bike....

I think you could pick up a Cane Creek, or FSA in the range of $25-$50 US, and they would probably serve you well. Once, I even had a Shimano XT headset, and it lasted for a few years.

Personally, I have a Chris King that's so old, it's purple. I think I've had it nine or ten years, and is still perfect. They're expensive, but last a long long time.

If you're not going to keep the bike a long time, though, you'd probably be better off with a mid-ranged priced one like the ones listed above. If you go too cheap, you'll be replacing it again next year.

the only way you'll know for sure is to take it apart and have a look. It sounds like it needs an overhaul at the very least so take it apart anyway and if there is exessive wear or damage then get it replaced. Other wise pack it with lithuim grease and put it back together. If there is still a notch after a rebuild then replace it for sure.

i would go for a Ritchey Logic headset. Cheep, cheerful and very reliable and easy to service. I have had one on my lower end mtb and it has taken a power of abuse for about 7 years...just keep it well greased and service it every 12 months as it isnt sealed and it should give you years of pleasure. Costs about £15 in the uk....prolly about 20-25 usd.

I picked the bike up from the LBS this afternoon- I ended up going with the Cane Creek C4. Cartridge bearings so hopefully much less susceptible to the previous problem. Parts and labour cost me $90 AUD... there were cheaper headsets there but I went for a slightly mid range option.
