I just put a 2001 Buenos Aires on 90 day Lay away but I have one question that the bs couldn't answer. This bike has the old headset I think it is like a 1 1/4 instead of 1 1/8??? Anyway, I'm told that if I were to replace the fork there may be an issue because I would have find one within those specs. 2nd. Understanding that I could not replace the fork but would I be able to replace the headset or will I run into the same problem. I am excited about the bike, took some solid advice on this forum plus the bike shop gave me a deal and the bike rides like a dream.

Lemond road never used a 11/4 fork. 2000 BA old style was 1" threaded. 2002 BA appears to be 1" threadless. If the bike shop cannot give you a straight answer to something like this,find another bike shop FAST!!!. All they have to do is measuare the friggin steerer if the nose pickers cannot tell just by looking.

ok it is 1" but they guy doesn't know if it is threaded or not. I had read somewhere that it was but I could be mistaken. There is another bs that specializes in Lemonds that will know. However, I assume threadless or threaded changes my options? I have at least two other bike shops that have very knowledgeable staff. However, they couldn't touch the deal on this BA....Could the 1 inch head set be the reason the "price was right?"

That guy must be a moron! You can tell by looking if it is threadless or not. All you have to do is look to see if there is 2 big nuts on the top of the Headset:that makes it threaded..A wrench goes on the lower one to set the preload and is held while the locknut is tightened to hold the setting.. There is nothing wrong with 1" HS, and even tho threadless or threaded changes your options, threaded can have it's own advantages if you need to get the bars higher. If you should need to change the fork and cannot find threaded, you simply get a threadless, and also switch out the HS and stem. The price is low because it's a 2001.
Anyone that works at a bike shop should be able to tell you whether it's a threaded or threadless fork/headset from twenty feet away. Unbelievable! I wouldn't shy away from the bike just because of tha though.

Yeah, a quill stem is also a real 'bule clue', but then the nose picker has to know what a quill stem is.

Thanks Boudreaux, I knew you would come through since it was a LeMond. Well, I agree that the bs has clueless staff but I am just as clueless hehe... I guess I'm just lucky you guys were here to share valuable info with me. Unfortunately for me, this bs has the bike I like. I'm relieved that I can upgrade if needed down the road. If I it could not be upgraded I was leaning towards a 2003 FUJI Roubaix for about 100 bucks less than the LeMond that is at a bike shop that knows what the @$%&* their talking about. So, I can always take it to another bike shop with knowledgable mechanics if need be until I learn how to work on it myself...But just incase they tick me off with the Buenos Aires, is there anything wrong with the Roubaix?.. It too was a nice ride and it has the same 105 components as the BA. Of course being a newby I doubt that I could tell a difference between the two if there was one...thank you all for you quick response!!!

Fuji has been aound a long time, and is good bang for the buck. There are big differences in how they Lemonds(c-c) and Fuji(c- top of extended seattube) are sized, and significant geometry differences.Also the difference between steel and aluminum frames.

really dont worry about the lemond, threaded systems have worked ages and like it was said if you really had to you could buy a new fork head set and stem for not too much if you really had to or wanted to, or use an adapter, or whatever. and there is plenty of stuff avalable in one inch diameter

The BA is a 53cm which is a good fit for the legs but my question about he headset/stem is based on I personally feel better with the handlebar raised a bit. The bikeshop as discussed before doesn't seem like they know a lot about the bike or the fit. The bs where the fuji is which is available in a 56 and a 54 (the 56 felt better) seems to know more about fitting a rider and they several systems there. So this what I'm deciding this weekend... I like both bikes but as you said... one is steel and the other is alum... I might have to take a spin on them again.....

What a relief, the LeMond is sweet... but now my decision is harder to make now.. If you guys had said to leave that 1" stuff alone, I would have picked the fuji.. Now my decision requires more riding...hehe Thanks for the advice though!
One of my riding partners has a Lemond BA, velvet smooth ride to it, but not the least bit flexy. A superb bike, I really enjoy taking it for a run.
It is extremely unlikely that you would need to replace the fork and/or headset anytime in the next few years, so it really doesn't matter. For example, I have a 30 year old Falcon bike, still has the original Campy Record threaded headset on it. Still in perfect working order.
