I bought a pair of shop built wheels the other night - Velocity disc rims with Hayes Elite hubs. The guy at the bike shop said the hubs were really Hugi but I think they are Hadley... either way - on the first off road ride, a race of course, one of the bearing races broke in half, causing the freewheel to stop working and making it so I had to pedal continuously or have the chain wrap around the cassette. Of course the LBS ordered a new race and is fixing it for free but I'm a little concerend that these hubs are anything but elite. I mean the hub had 15 miles on it before it went [censored]. Anyone else had problems like this? Is it just a fluke or should I go with a more reputable hub mfgr?

Once is happenstance, twice is coincidence, three times is enemy action. So if it happens again you've got a crappy hub and if it happens another time after that you need to look for a saboteur.

If you did not race, I would say get a pair of mid-range 36 hole Campagnolo or Shimano hubs, Sun CR18 rims, and 15-16 spokes; build them and ride forever. But racers need super-light wheels; what do your fellow racers use?

Really hard to beat shimano, say XT, for hubs. The 'aftermarket' hubs are all about fluff and as you found, short on performance.

Well, I was wondering how you built 36-hole hubs into functioning wheels using 15 or 16 spokes, but I just now realised you meant 15/16 gauge double butted spokes, so my question is actually not particularly relevant.
Two weeks later and the lame LBS has still not gotten in the new race to fix the hub. Also I read some reviews on mtbr.com about these hubs and the bearing race breaking is way common. I'll never purchase a Hayes product again, that's for sure...
