  1. ....in on the middle, we'd yet to learn
The beginning and wouldn't stay for the end,
But somehow had to seize the meaning
From the simplest scene -- a ribon
Winding itself around a well-marked sign, silver crescnet
Moon dipping itself into a royal blue sky, a window
Half open to invite the other in.
Now you'd gone off into yourself with nothing to turn over
But cause and effect and a neatly wrapped package
Containing one small orb, round and fragrant,
Enclosed in yellow rind, yielding a set of like or similar
Parts to play, a costume party given
In which each must restore the shuffled cards
Back into their previous position. The night stars
Blinked, thin shadows falling over tiles
In grey stripes of cadenced bars defining our imprisonment.
From book to book we wandered in search of the Page's
Assistance. Finally, I turned to you
And plainly stated, "We must mark the cards,
Then place them back in their proper container.
And tie the ribbon securely." Running from window
To the next, stopping fancy from running riot
In the margin, we found the severed ribbon
And tied a double bow -- then wrapped our evidence
In our intention and dealt another hand....
