It might give a person a warm and fuzzy feeling to say that he is oil
free, but petroleum products are obviously used in the manufacture of
bicycles and their components. Petroleum byproducts comprise so much of
the things we use in our daily lives that it practically impossible to
think that a person in any kind of an advanced society could go a whole
day and NOT use something that is directly derived from petroleum.

I am all for reducing oil consumption. I also don't begrudge anybody
the right to make a buck selling tshirts and stuff, but realistically,
almost nobody is oil free.

I AM? OMG! I didn't know! Heavens to Betsy! Tell me how I'm just as

virtually all local errands, or that I drive a 30mpg 15 y/o gas guzzler

Why do you think I'm trying to make a difference? Did I say that? Nope.
Don't make assumptions. I'm a critic of those that think tokenism is
worthy of bumperstickers and t shirts. I ride my bike for errands
because I grew up doing so in Sweden and it seems normal to me. I also
wear wooden clogs most of the time, not because they save a child in
China from the manufacturing industry, I wear them because I've always
worn them. This cigar is just a cigar.

If you want to make a difference and encourage cycling, there are
better ways than t-shirt tokenism, the best is to encourage local
businesses to offer secure bike racks. All a smug t-shirt does is
alienate folks. You'd encourage more folks to ride if you did your
commute in a smart sport coat and calf skin lace-ups instead of a
t-shirt. Lead by example, not by cheap little sound bites.

As if this is a *new* thing? Wars have been fought over resources (including
oil) for a very long time. The, as you say it, "END OF OIL" is old news. We
thought it was running out in the 70s, and that by now we'd all be driving
electric cars (with the electricity generated by what, I don't now...
probably nuclear).

Unfortunately, the "END OF OIL" will probably usher in the widespread use of
coal, along with relaxed environmental standards.

But my guess is that we're still a ways off from having to worry about how
to fill our cars, and that the oil companies will manipulate pricing in such
a way that we keep our addiction as long as possible. Funny how gas drops
down in price just about the same time people start thinking about buying
more-efficient cars.
