  1. I have a bmx tire on the rear of my tailwind. A large tire at 1.95 it is a
dura x-performer 50-406. The psi reading is 75 but I have it pumped to 90.
On a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being completely safe and 10 being suicidal, how
would you rate what I am doing?

    1.1

If you're worried, pump it up another 50 or 60 (with earplugs in, if
you like) and leave it overnight.

On my unicycles I routinely run tyres at about twice what teh
side-wall says (for road riding, anyway). Side-wall figures rarely
have any really good basis for them, since the blow-off pressure is so
dependant on things like teh goodness of fit and profile of teh rim.

On teh other hand, I did once pump up an inner tube 'till it burst.
It reached a remarkable size, and made a remarkable bang. My ears
were ringing for some time, but that wasn't hepled by teh fact that I
cleverly decide to do this in a garage.

People here have been recommending I overinflate my tires by about 10psi for
as long as I have been biking for additional speed. Haven't died yet.

Since this is on-topic and not corrupted as of yet, here goes:

I'd rate this a 2. But running under-inflated would probably be less
safe. I ran dirt tires on my 20" rims on a RANS and always
over-inflated them and I'm still here.

I recall Zach kaplan experimenting with this. He pumped a 100 psi tire
up to something like 240 psi before the rim broke. IIRC, pressure
ratings are generally 1/2 of their average burst pressure.

I find that much over 110 psi gives me a lousy ride on anything but
very smooth pavement. This is on a Tour Easy with 28mm tires front &
    rear.

I have run a tyre rated 80psi pumped to 100psi for extended periods over
rough roads in hot weather without incident.

Actually it was a particularly tough looking 35 psi rated tyre I was
testing for tandem use at a time when there was very limited selection
of wide, high pressure rated tyres. It stayed on the rim at 180 psi at
which point the rim started deforming.

Eeeee!! *Five* times rated pressure? That's one tough tire!

With some of the freestyle tires rated at 120psi, do you want to
repeat the test? I'd recommend body armor...
