  1. 1. His reputation : doper and a liar to boot
    2. His status as best German racer with Kloden's performance
    3. His current job
    4. His career as a cyclist, no one is going to build a team for him
now and I doubt he'll come back as a second fiddle, maybe with Astana,
can he be hired technically speaking ?
    5. His future job with T-Mobile see yesterday's PR
    6. His wife (couple of years ago)

Hope he's got some cash stowed away because I doubt he'll get much for
his now useless home built hyperbaric chamber.

Hope he doesn't pull off a Pantani and takes his leave too early :-(

    Monty Python did the skit.

  6. he hasn't lost everything, he still has a sizable child support check he
must send to Gabby, his ex-wife, monthly.

Well, he's probably still a wealthy man--a lot depends on how well he
manages what he has left. Fans tend to be fairly forgiving. He'll still
rake in the Euros with personal appearances (although the fees wouldn;t
be a high as their otherwise would have been); he'll still ride in
    crits.

There is always a book deal.

Besides, Ulli has had his scandals and suspensions before, and always
bounced back. Maybe a couple of years off the saddle (in terms of the
competitive grind) will preserve his legs.

    But...he did screw things up.

Alleged. Although it's clear that some people close to him believe the
allegation. Still, let's wait and see.

However his reputation was built up over a number of years. Many people
will remain loyal to him simply for what he has achieved, even if it is
proved that he did use blood-doping; many people, particularly cycling
fans, will know perfectly well that this issue is not black and white,
and that he - and Basso, who had a much better chance of winning this
year, and Vinokourov, who hasn't personally been implicated in
    anything - were sacrificial victims.

So yes, his reputation is harmed, particularly in the short term. But in
the long term he'll still be a hero for many cyclists and for many
    people in Germany.

    2. His status as best German racer with Kloden's performance

Probably. I don't think Ullrich would have won this tour even if he'd
raced; but now, of course, we'll never know.

    Quoted message said:

    3. His current job

Probably. But German labour law is pretty strict, and they'll have to
show better cause than they have so far shown us.

That was over anyway. He did have a reasonable chance of coming back in
some team leadership role in future, and that has probably gone.

Why is it useless? Hyperbaric chambers are still legal, after all.

Well, on another note, I think we can expect to see Kloden with his job and
a big fat contract to go with it. Bring on the strudels!

About Pantani, I'm convinced he OD'ed. Am I being naive?

Yes, that's probably been the only good news for T-Mobile lately,
they've found someone to replace Ullrich, better climber too at least
at this point in time. Can't be easy for Kloden though as they
    were/are apparently close friends.

Also seems like that, but OD'ing is rarely an accident, I mean you
really need to be at a low point to have that type of problem.

  11. Well, it's the second time T-Mobil has fired him (well actually
the first time they were Deutsche Telekom). They will probably re-hire
him in a year or two, given there is no one else with his talent.

In any case, even the completely disgraced endure. I'm probably one
of the few people here who has seen Ben Johnson's recent TV
commercial, which is bizarre even by adertising standards:
    http://adweek.blogs.com/adfreak/2006/03/ben_johnson_che.html
What next, Genevieve Jeanson bike commercials?

Blimey, I just read in L'Equipe that his contract was costing T-Mobile
2.5M euros per month, that can't be right, must be a typo, maybe 2.5M
euros per year. In any case that gave hime an opportunity so leave

Yes, I doubt he can get back his superstar status though in Germany,
especially with Kloden seemingly being able to take over and everyone
wants to move on after this whole mess of cheating and lying...

Ludwig says Ullrich and Sevilla might be able to stay on board if they
bring proof that they have no connection to Fuentes on the
conciliatory meeting planned next week...Looks like a tall order
especially for Sevilla who was apparently caught on cameras !

Millions that he "expected" to get?

How does an ex-jock make millions after his game is done? Which one of these
won't Ullrich be able to do? Do you suppose that Giant won't make a special
    Ullrich edition TCR?

Not if he goes down in flaming wreckage which appears likely.

His defense is not that of the falsely accused.

I think that Zabel would actually be considered Germany's best racer.

Many did even before the doping allegations started. Kloeden's performance
this year was great (trying...not...to...get...into...team tactics...),
but in order to surpass either Ullrich or Zabel in status will take
consistent performance at this level, which unfortunately he couldn't
deliver over the years so far due to injuries. Even if he could, Kloeden's
public personality may be in the way. He is a nice guy and everything but
doesn't sell as well as the other two.

Also, currently we are talking about doping allegations in the case of
Ullrich. Even if found guilty, I reckon not too many fans of the sport
consider pro cycling as an otherwise clean sport. They want to watch
exciting races and drama, accepting that performance enhancing
(or sustaining) substances are part of many (if not most) riders' dietary
plans. Ullrich has delivered consistently over ten years and his public
standing may not suffer too much.

Nevertheless, it's cool that Landis got a win before his surgery.
