Hmm, perhaps slight overkill. Especially as I
already have a CS100 sitting on the bars...
(which I really like BTW).

yeah but how much is it ? 🙂

As one "gadget tragic" to another. Best advice is seek therapy to help you
get beyond the need to know.

Or alternatively:
Get a digital thermometer with a sensor (wireless or wired) to permit
display of outside temp inside so you know in advance.

Or look at www.bom.gov.au for temp readings.

It might be bloody freezing, but once you start moving the wind chill factor
cuts in and makes it worse. Thermometer won't measure that.

Wet bulb temperature. Immerse the digital thermometer in a bowl full
of water on the handlebars. That should do it.

Check out Planet Bike computers. I know their 9 model has temperature, and it's a quality bike computer to boot. Mine appears to be accurate, although leaving it sitting in full sun in summer can provide some amusing results.

Well, after a raft of "helpful" suggestions,
some of which included the need for on-the-bike
internet access, I've come up with my own cheap
and cheerful solution - a $15 digital aquarium
thermometer from [censored] Smith. It has the added bonus
of being water-proof. No in built GPS (how're you
going to know where the fish are?) or internet access
(how last millenium is that?) but two zip ties and
it's on the bars. Will road test it tomorrow.

Well, on my "good bike", I've got an ergobrain
(with groovy controls integrated into brake levers)
and the CS100 with cadence. However, I'm in a
constant state of internal conflict as besides
being a gadget tragic, I dislike having too much
clutter on the bars - ahhhggg!

I just bought a Tronica (?) speedo from Aldi - $6.99 on special, $9.99
otherwise. It has current temp, max and min trip temps, as well as all the
usual features (and two dodgy ones - calories and fat burned). Seems to be
accurate. Not as svelte as a Sigma or Cateye, but meh.

So you could have spent less money for more functions! Oh well. ;^)

Yeah, I did notice that and the same thing occurred
to me - a water thermometer that goes below 0C is not
much use, unless it's hyper-saline or under extremely
high pressure. Doesn't drop below zero very often in
Perth and if it does, I'm not likely to be on my bike.

Have taken it out a couple times and the reading seems
quite volatile. Not sure what the response time is for
a change in air temperature but I think it's of the order
of minutes.

You could try a thermochron.

A bit expensive, but I got one free with a serial dongle by simply requesting
samples from Maxim. There's a sample button for most small items. It's
kind of pot luck if they send you stuff, works best if you aren't
greedy. 🙂

Very small, water resistant and can log temp in 1 minute intervals for
about a week. Suck the data out and graph to heart's content. Cool for
other pointless pursuits like throwing into your luggage that goes into
