Uncanny. I was going to use that tagline in the sidebar, but you beat me to
it :-) I guess Raimondas just rides for a local team now. The Lithuanians
forgave him, IIRC.

Vaitkus won both titles last year. Always hard to repeat that. Watch him on
Sunday if it's a small bunch sprint. He's the sort of guy that can lead out
for a kilometre at 60 km/h, then get out of the saddle and punch it home for
the last 150m.

He briefly rode for Acqua & Sapone last year following the end of his
suspension, but his contract wasn't renewed for 2005. Clearly he hasn't
lost morale, though. To come back from a completely, utterly finished
career and defeat a talented time-trialist like Vaitkus - and with no
racing miles to prepare him - is pretty stunning. As much as the guy
has put himself through, I have to hand it to him.

Interestingly, Cycle Sport America came today and they say he is
riding for a local Italian club team Parkpre-Guru-Selle Italia now,
and is UCI eligible, although I guess he can't join a Pro Tour team
(or is that not retroactive to that period?) and making a living from
sponsorship and riding what appear to be sideline competitive events.

Evidently enough to keep him in decent racing shape.

Jeff Joneses think alike. I wouldn't have been upset if you used it
anyway, it was an independent thought and it's not like I could've been
paid royalties. That goes for any time I might just happen to say
something unusually insightful, by the way. 😉

Vaitkus is a pretty interesting rider. His palmares are short since
he's only 23, but they're already quite diverse. There are one-day
races, random breakaways in stage races, cobblestone classics, ITT's...
very impressive.
