Just about any variety of tomato can be made determinate by pinching off the top of the main stems. I grow a few container tomatoes on my back deck and stop the upward growth at about 4 feet. This allows the plant to put more energy into a thicker stem and larger fruit. I also use cages to keep them upright. This year I used Miracle Grow planting medium in the pots and in the two weeks since I planted them, they have grown from a spindly 3" high to a thick stemed 18" high. I have high hopes:-). H

Good to know about the MG planting stuff - I had 4 cu. feet of it for my 3 giant pots for tomatoes. I found some old-fashioned Brandywines at my supermarket parking lot nursery, and got them planted in deck pots on Saturday - they already had tiny blossoms on them and they look quite perky...the tag says "80 days." I have stakes in the pots, but likely will have to go to chicken-wire cages.
