I just learned today that Grete Waitz got cancer in 2005. Is there
any update on how she is doing?
I saw her once in the 1980's after she smoked everyone in the Asbury
Park 10k.
I yelled her name out when I spotted her on the board walk afterward.
She turned and
waved. One of the high points of my running life. A homely humble
little girl with a nice smile, a heart of gold and the
drive of a freight train -- bless her always.
I use to run with Dr. George Sheehan in New Jersey too. For years he
called my Andy. I never knew that that was his son's name. I was still
in Jersey when he died of cancer. It's sad to see a runner go down
especially one with class.
Their legends live but never quite long enough.
It was also sad when Walt Stack died. The only admitted communist that
I have any respect for. He did it all with
style ( start out slow and taper off Walt.).
Grete if you're out there, there's at least one generation of
Americans (we can still say that right?) A generation
of Americans that love you. Love you like one of our own.
By the way Angs isn't my real name, it's the name of my dog (he's dead
too). No he didn't run -- he didn't have to. He was an Alpha dog -- he
just had to lift his leg.
I use to be dead (as in DRS) but I got over it.
