Was my first encounter with the Wharfedale Whernside, and while it has
a very flat, plateau-like summit, the views as the walk unfolds are
varied and extensive. Snow of course adds another dimension to such
hills. Pendle Hill, Pen y Ghent, Ingleborough, Whernside of the 3
peaks, and some of the Lakeland fells were all visible. (Probably the
Scafells)

The late autumn light was superb, with high cloud giving some good
skyscapes, and if anything the sky becoming clearer during the day,
which was unexpected.

In all, a good fell day - pictures to follow when I get round to
uploading them onto the web.

We always intended to do Gt Whernside, but the only time we set off from
Kettlewell the weather closed in horribly and we diverted back into the
dale. Much better than the other dreary Whernside.

I did it Friday, fantastic! Clear all day, cold, crisp, powdery snow,
hardly anyone else, probably the same circular as you, I go clockwise
which seems to be against the general counterclockwise many people seem
to do.

Fantastic sight, which I missed most of, of a 4-engined Hercules
coming over the saddle between Whernside and Buckden Pike, I was
behind a wall putting on ly gaiters and only looked up when it
was already past me and a hundred feet below, damn. Buzzed by
the Tocano jet trainer on the saddle, though and the other little
one the flies around there, too, and a couple of jets went screaming
over the peak itself. I like the planes, myself!
