Great use for a threadless stem

All I need to do now is cut the handlebars down and cap them.

This is great as the weight in the handlebar bag will not affect
steering and it freed up the handlebar for a water bottle mount.

I use Profile resin cages. The one on the handlebar is a great place to
place a hot cup of coffee on an early morning ride.

It's not unusual to use threadless stems to mount stoker bars on tandems,
provided the captains seatpost is a compatible diameter.

I did something similar but out front, as the map-holding capabilities
of a bar-bag top are useful to me.

Instead of cutting up a perfectly good handlebar, though, I used some
1" OD ABS conduit I happened to have lying around. Here's a link to my

That is indeed very cool. It's similar in positioning to the SQR
Carradice bags (the resemblance would be stronger with a shorter stem).
A very nice adaption to your needs.

The handlebar I used was an old steel MTB bar which had already been
cut down to 44 cm to match the width of a road bar. It was just lying
around.

I have seen many riders clip their maps to their Shimano brifter
cables.
